The Marriott name has been a staple in the hospitality industry since the late 20th century and now reigns as the largest hotel chain in the world, with a whopping 1.4 million rooms on its roster across 139 different countries and territories.

Marriott offers a whole range of hotels and resorts. There are chic inner-city palaces that overlook the Big Apple, beach-side relaxation pads on the coral atolls of the Maldives, ski-in lodges in the Rockies and safari bases in the East African Rift.

The only question left is which one to book for your next vacation. Read on for our guide to the 10 best Marriott hotels around the world.

The St. Regis New York, New York

To walk into the St. Regis New York is to follow in the footsteps of stars. Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Elizabeth Taylor have all stayed here, and John Lennon even recorded a demo in a suite here back in 1971!

This imposing East 55th Street property is unquestionably one of the most legendary members of the Marriott chain. It sports flowing marble lobbies and a Baroque façade that oozes luxury from top to bottom.

While it may seem like a museum, the hotel also flaunts modern fitness facilities, a yoga room, an elegant cognac nook for drinking the finest from France. You also can’t miss the King Cole Bar- the undisputed home of the Bloody Mary cocktail.

Hotel Alfonso XIII, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Seville

SmarterTravel Hotels

Tucked between the University of Seville and the maze-like old town of this enthralling Andalusian city, the Hotel Alfonso XIII is a Marriott that effortlessly blends the old and the new.

The building dates to 1929, when it was raised on orders from the King of Spain to be a hotel for visiting monarchs and VIPs from around the world.

The piece de resistances here include the stunning covered cloisters, which have been converted into peaceful reading rooms, and the outdoor pool space, nestled neatly under rows of Sevillian orange trees.

St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort, Maldives

SmarterTravel Hotels

The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort is a Marriott that pushes the boundaries of conventional hoteliering. Set on its own island in the midst of the Indian Ocean, it’s got access to over a kilometer of completely private beachfront, all of which is quintessential Maldives white powder and turquoise H2O.

There are 44 overwater villas where you can wake to visions of rainbowfish and parrotfish darting through the coral reefs below. Guests can access the Iridium Spa for eastern-inspired massage and aromatherapy treatments. There’s an on-site watersports outfitter to help you plan those yacht excursions and sailing trips.

Bulgari Hotel London, London

SmarterTravel Hotels

The prestigious Bulgari Hotel is a five-star stay that makes its home in the heart of London’s upscale Knightsbridge district. Peer from the windows and you’ll be able to see the Serpentine Lake wiggling through Hyde Park, and Harrod’s department store is just down the road.

The rooms here are a statement in edgy design. Even the smallest rooms are around 463 square feet in space, while the pricier suites are inlaid with rich hardwood flooring and draped with bespoke velveteen curtains.

The spa is certainly one of the highlights at the Bulgari. After long days of sightseeing along the Thames, you can return to what’s one of the largest spas in Central London, complete with a 25-meter pool, a hammam, and hydromassage baths.

Al Maha, A Luxury Collection Desert Resort & Spa, Dubai

SmarterTravel Hotels

Escape the hustle and bustle and soaring steel skyscrapers of Dubai for the Al Maha resort. It’s a self-billed oasis in the deserts of the UAE that’s luxury from check in to check out.

Outside, suites with infinity pools open onto sweeping 180-degree vistas of the wild Hajar Mountain plateau. As you laze and daydream there, you’ll spot a montage of camel herds and oryx, and watch the dust devils billowing on the sand dunes on the horizon.

Al Maha is also home to the acclaimed Al Diwaan restaurant, where you can dine on exquisite international fare as the sun glows red and pink across the undulating Arabian Desert.

Protea Hotel by Marriott Livingstone, Zambia

SmarterTravel Hotels

The Protea Hotel by Marriott is unquestionably one the best Marriott hotels in Africa. Just four miles to the north of the roaring Victoria Falls and right on the cusp of the rhino-stalked Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, it’s certainly got the location.

But safari goers will return to spacious suites done out in contemporary styles, each with just a hint of the vernacular coming through in the curious Zambian artworks and paintings. The outdoor areas are also fantastic. There’s a relaxing pool space and a series of sitting terraces framed by flower-sprouting ponds.

There’s hardly a better option for adventurers keen to combine safaris and sightings of the famous falls.

JW Marriott Orlando Grande Lakes, Orlando

SmarterTravel Hotels

If you’ve got your sights set on the iconic theme parks of Orlando, FL, and want somewhere fun-filled and just a bit luxurious for the whole family, the JW Marriott Orlando Grande Lakes won’t disappoint.

Set neatly midway between the vibrant downtown Orlando and the endless rollercoasters and rides of Lake Buena Vista, the resort counts a whopping 5,000 acres of space. It uses that to offer up the sprawling Grande Lakes Water Park, which itself has looping slides and a lazy river to entertain the younger ones.

Mom and dad might prefer to busy themselves on the Greg Norman-designed championship golf course, or at the on-site field-to-table eatery, Whisper Creek Farm.

The Cloudveil, Autograph Collection, Wyoming

SmarterTravel Hotels

Veteran skiers and hikers of Jackson Hole will know that Town Square is a hubbub of life both summer and winter. It’s the place to be, and The Cloudveil – Marriott’s award-winning luxury option in the resort – puts you smack dab in the action.

Step outside to see the iconic Antler Arches and the rows of après bars and saloons. Or simply don’t leave, because there’s plenty to keep you busy within, from hearty mountain-style suites to a rustic-chic lobby space with a roaring log fire.

You only need ask at reception and they’ll help you explore the region to the full – think 4X4 rides, guided hikes, excursions to Yellowstone National Park, and ski passes.

The Gritti Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Venice

SmarterTravel Hotels

Nothing says romance like The Gritti Palace. Shouldering its way above the iconic Grand Canal of Venice, the hotel is housed in a Gothic palazzo that dates from 1475. From the terraces out front, you can watch the gondolas bobbing by as you sip an evening Spritz, or enjoy a morning coffee as the sun kisses the tops of the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute across the way.

There are a couple of things that set this one apart from the crowd. First, the hotel is one of the few in the world to host it’s own cooking school. Cue the Gritti Epicurean School, a place to acquaint yourself with the art of Italian food. Then there’s the Riva Yacht, a high-class motorboat that’s for the exclusive use of guests who want to whiz around the famous Venice Lagoon from isle to isle.

The Naka Island, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Phuket

Aerial view of The Naka Island, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Phuket grounds
SmarterTravel Hotels

Forget Phuket’s body-packed beaches and beer-sloshing nightlife towns. For R&R, you’re much better off with a stint at The Naka Island, a Luxury Collection hotel that sits on paradisiacal Ko Naka Yai just off the east coast of Phuket proper.

The resort occupies the northern tip of the isle, where a scything S-bend of white sand runs under the coconut trees. There are villa suites that open onto lush gardens that sprout banyan trees. Others have polished-concrete living spaces that spill into infinity pools with sweeping views of the Andaman Sea.

Ko Naka Yai itself is home to umpteen other secret coves and snorkeling lagoons. It’s 100% car-free, too, which means bike, sea kayak, and hiking boots are the ticket to getting around.

Historic Boston draws travelers looking to experience New England culture, tour the city’s famous universities, and sample the area’s famous seafood. The city is home to a huge number of hotels, offering everything from a luxury waterfront hotel with gorgeous harbor views to a trendy renovated former prison. We’ve narrowed down the choices to the 15 best hotels in Boston for every type of traveler.

Mandarin Oriental Boston

Front entrance of the Mandarin Oriental Boston

Awarded both the prestigious Forbes Five-Stars and AAA Five-Diamonds ratings, the Mandarin Oriental is the epitome of luxury. The hotel’s Boylston Street location will put you firmly in the heart of Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood—and it’s directly connected to the Prudential Center, so you can shop and dine without having to set foot outside.

Rooms at the Mandarin Oriental are surprisingly spacious for an urban hotel, starting at 410 square feet, and outfitted in a chic Art Deco style.

Make sure to schedule a treatment at the hotel’s famous 16,000 square-foot spa for the ultimate in pampering before you go.

The Liberty Hotel

Front entrance of the The Liberty Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts, United States

Ever spent the night in prison? You can say you have after sleeping at The Liberty Hotel. Of course, accommodations in this former historic prison turned luxury hotel are a million times more comfortable than a jail cell (but you’ll still find playful nods to its past in the decor throughout).

The hotel’s aptly named restaurants and bars (Clink, Alibi, and The Yard) attract a vibrant mix of locals and tourists practically every night of the week. The Catwalk (located on the jail’s original Catwalk) is a guest-only bar that offers an unbeatable perch for people-watching.

The Newbury Boston

Front entrance of the The Newbury Boston, Massachusetts, United States

Opened in 1927 as one of the first Ritz-Carlton hotels in the US, this historic property was transformed in 2018 to reopen as the revamped and rebranded The Newbury Boston. Nestled on the edge of the Boston Public Garden, many rooms here offer stunning park views. In the winter, book a Classic Fireplace Suite which features a romantic wood-burning fireplace.

Make a reservation at the hotel’s Contessa restaurant when you book your stay—seatings for this highly-acclaimed Italian eatery fill up a month in advance.

The Colonnade Hotel Boston

The Colonnade Hotel Boston, Massachusetts, United States

Hotels with pools are scarce in Boston (which makes sense, as swimming season is a few short months here.) However, if you’re visiting in the summer, you’ll want to book The Colonnade Hotel as its crown jewel is the property’s gorgeous outdoor rooftop pool. The pool is surrounded by private cabanas and offers a summer experience that’s impossible to find anywhere else in the city.

When you’re done sunning and swimming, the hotel’s central Back Bay location is primed for exploring.

W Boston

Exterior of the W Boston at night in Boston, Massachusetts, United States

Catching a show in Boston? The W Hotel is the best hotel in the Theater District. The hotel recently underwent a $10 million renovation, and the property looks brand-new. Rooms at the hotel were “inspired by notorious Boston disruptors, from Aerosmith to Edgar Allan Poe,” says the W.

Boston Marriott Long Wharf

The Boston Marriott Long Wharf holds an iconic spot directly on Boston Harbor. Take advantage of the location by booking one of the luxury waterfront suites that feature a balcony with stunning harbor views.

Can’t swing a suite? Treat yourself to a meal at the hotel’s Waterline restaurant, which offers equally amazing scenery.

Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport

Exterior of the Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport in Boston, Massachusetts, United States

With 1,054 guest rooms and suites, the Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport is one of the biggest in Boston. The Omni Seaport is another rare Boston hotel with an outdoor pool—this one is located on the fifth-floor rooftop and offers gorgeous views of the city skyline. The open-air Lifted Pool Bar & Grill serves up cocktails and a food menu from 11 am – 9 pm daily.

The Omni Seaport puts a priority on wellness. Maintain your workout routine in the 3,000 square foot gym that’s stocked with Peloton Bikes, TRX stations, and more. Or, focus on self-care with a trip to the full-service Breve Spa.

Cambria Hotel Boston

Exterior of Cambria Hotel Boston, Massachusetts, United States

The Cambria Hotel is a popular destination for locals in the warm weather who flock to the hotel’s rooftop for a buzzy nightlife scene, creative cocktails, and epic city views. Book a room here to be close to both the rooftop action and the lively South Boston neighborhood next door.

The Cambria is located right across the street from a T station, so you’ll be able to easily hop on the red line to explore the city.

Four Seasons Hotel One Dalton Street

One Dalton Street, a 61-story skyscraper that opened in 2019, was the tallest building to be built in Boston since the John Hancock Tower went up in 1976. The tower houses the Four Seasons Hotel and the brand’s luxury residential apartments.

Rooms are as luxurious as you would expect from the Four Seasons, starting at 397 square feet. The suites really shine here, featuring large soaking tubs set in front of floor-to-ceiling windows and private outdoor decks overlooking Boston.

Boston Park Plaza

Stay in a piece of Boston’s history (but with modern amenities) at the Boston Park Plaza. The property opened in 1927 as The Statler Hotel and hosted dignitaries and celebrities including Winston Churchill and Judy Garland. When the Park Plaza opened, rooms cost as little as $3.50 a night—today, you can find rooms for as low as $114 per night in the off-season.

The Boston Park Plaza underwent a $100 million renovation in 2016 that updated and modernized the property while still retaining the historic touches it’s so famous for.

Battery Wharf Hotel Boston Waterfront

Exterior of Battery Wharf Hotel Boston Waterfront on the waterfront in Boston, Massachusetts, United States

Set on the Boston Harbor just outside the city’s famous North End neighborhood, the Battery Wharf Hotel boasts one of the best locations in Boston. A stay here will put you near the North End’s Italian restaurants, touristy Faneuil Hall, and the TD Garden.

Many rooms offer waterfront views, and all rooms have windows that can open so you can enjoy the fresh sea breeze—a rarity for hotels.

The Ritz Carlton Boston

Just steps from the Boston Common, newly renovated rooms at The Ritz-Carlton offer park or city views along with large marble soaking tubs, Bose radios, and Frette linens. An in-house Bath Butler can draw a selection of relaxing baths upon demand for total relaxation.

Continue the relaxation with The Ritz-Carlton’s spa (run in conjunction with Equinox Sports Club) which offers a range of facials, massages, and treatments.

The Verb Hotel

If you’re catching a game or concert at Fenway Park, you can’t stay any closer than The Verb Hotel, which overlooks the storied ballpark. Originally a motor inn, The Verb has been completely redone into a stylish musically-themed boutique hotel.

Music-lovers will find more than 1,700 vinyl records in the lobby library, Audio-Technica Record Turntables in the rooms, and rock n’ roll art throughout.

Party like a rockstar and then sleep in late the next day—rooms at The Verb feature blackout blinds and the lobby is stocked with nitro-brewed coffee 24/7.

Moxy Boston Downtown

Exterior of Moxy Boston Downtown

Looking for a kid-free Boston vacation? The Moxy Boston Downtown bills itself as “Boston’s first adult playground,” and guests are greeted with a complimentary signature cocktail upon check-in. You’ll have to be 21 or over to stay at this party-focused hotel that’s for adults only.

The Row Hotel

Front entrance of The Row Hotel in Somerville, Massachusetts, United States

Formerly a Ford Motor Assembly Plant and now a thoroughly modern hotel, The Row Hotel offers affordable rates just outside of Boston. Located in Somerville’s Assembly Square neighborhood, a new outdoor shopping mall set on the banks of the Mystic River, the hotel is within easy walking distance to a huge number of shops and eateries. If you want to venture into Boston, the nearby T stop makes it easy.

With its location near Legoland and an indoor pool, The Row Hotel is a great pick for family trips to Boston.

These stunningly beautiful hotels are a destination in their own right. Incredible architecture, lush landscaping, and gorgeous details make these properties restful retreats worth traveling for.

Fairmont Grand Del Mar: San Diego, California

Exterior of the Fairmont Grand Del Mar in San Diego, California

Set amidst 400 coastal canyon acres, the magnificent Fairmont Grand Del Mar is reminiscent of a private villa—albeit on a much grander scale. The resort’s grounds feel like a tropical paradise, with four heated pools surrounded by towering palm trees.

Inside, rooms are luxuriously outfitted with marble soaking tubs, gold fixtures, and plush furnishings which add to the hotel’s opulent vibe.

Halekulani: Honolulu, Hawaii

Pool facing the ocean at night at hotel Halekulani
Halekulani on the Beach at Waikiki

It’s hard for a hotel to compete with its surroundings when it’s located somewhere as stunningly beautiful as Honolulu’s Waikiki Beach. Halekulani blends into the surrounding scenery, with minimalist and airy rooms that keep the focus on the view.

The Halekulani’s centerpiece is their famous beachfront, oval-shaped heated pool. The pool’s floor is an orchid mosaic made out of 1.2 million glass tiles, so you’ll have something beautiful to admire no matter which direction you look.

Equinox Hotel New York: New York City, New York

Courtyard and decorative sculpture at the The Equinox Hotel in New York City, New York

The Equinox Hotel New York, a contemporary high-rise hotel in Manhattan, doesn’t look out of place next to the neighboring modern-art Vessel structure in Hudson Yards. The renowned fitness brand’s wellness ethos extends to its first hotel, with a design that’s intended to help guests relax and rejuvenate during their stay.

Eat an organic, healthy meal on the outdoor terrace overlooking New York, admire the Vessel while swimming laps in the pool, or take a workout class in the sprawling Equinox gym on-site. After, retreat to the guest rooms, which are optimized for sleep (with blackout curtains and ideal temperature settings) for a total reset.

Omni Mount Washington: Bretton Woods, New Hampshire

Omni Mount Washington, Bretton Woods, New Hampshire

A stately white building topped by eye-catching red roofs and backed by The White Mountains—The Omni Mount Washington makes quite the first impression, even from afar. (Eagle-eyed hikers can spot the hotel from some of the many trails around the property.)

This historic hotel was built by 250 skilled Italian craftsmen in the early 1900s and has since undergone over $90 million in renovations to lovingly restore it to its current glory. Guests will spot plenty of nods to the past throughout the property, including paintings of the original owners, vintage crystal chandeliers, and an original grandfather clock that dates back to the hotel’s opening.

Don Cesar: St. Pete Beach, Florida

Aerial view of the exterior of Don Cesar in St. Pete Beach, Florida

The “Pink Palace”, nicknamed for its colorful exterior, certainly stands out. The rose-hued Don Cesar towers over the white sand and turquoise waters of St. Pete Beach, making for a stunning contrast.

The famous hotel opened in 1928, and the property’s history is evident throughout, especially in the grand public spaces. The 277 guest rooms have all been thoroughly modernized, with custom millwork and a whimsical coastal bird motif that lends a fully Florida feel to the hotel.

Edgewood Tahoe Resort: Tahoe, Nevada

Large lobby sitting area at Edgewood Tahoe Resort in Nevada

Nestled on the banks of Lake Tahoe, the Edgewood Tahoe Resort is beautiful in all seasons. Modeled after the great lodges of the American West, Edgewood Tahoe adds a modern and eco-friendly ethos, with LEED-certified engineering and sustainability efforts.

The 235-acre resort offers incredible views of the High Sierras, and many rooms feature balconies from which to admire the scenery.

Cliff House Maine: Cape Neddick, Maine

Sitting area by the fire at Cliff House Maine

With two outdoor pools and an oceanfront location, you might think that the Cliff House Maine is best visited in the summer. However, the resort’s floor-to-ceiling windows offering panoramic views of the cliffs and ocean beyond, make this an unforgettable place to hole up during the winter and watch a storm come in. For peak coziness, book one of the guestrooms with a fireplace.

The Location

Saint Lucia is a Caribbean island situated between Martinique, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Barbados. Just under four hours from Miami, the island itself is small—roughly 230 square miles—and can be crossed length-wise in a two-hour drive. The tropical climate is tempered by coastal breeze, and travelers can expect to enjoy temperatures in the mid-70s to mid-80s year round.

The Landings Resort and Spa is located on Gros Islet on the northern tip of the island abutting Pigeon Island National Park, only a half hour drive from the capital of Castries and a two hour transfer from Hewanorra International Airport. Guests can contact The Landings’ Concierge Team to arrange a taxi, rental car, or private transfer to the hotel.

Tips: Adventurous vacationers can book a helicopter transfer between Hewanorra International Airport and George F.L. Charles airport, then complete the remaining commute via limousine.

The Property

The Landings Resort and Spa

Built in 2007 and renovated in 2016, The Landings is a sprawling resort encircling its own private marina, where guests can dock their private vessels for a nightly fee. Stone paths, lined with butterfly-filled gardens and swaying palm trees, meander throughout the grounds, all leading toward a peaceful stretch of white sand beach.

Each of the suites at The Landings is privately owned, with residents given the option to enter their property into a rental pool and authorize the resort to book their suites out to guests. Of the 150 suites making up the resort, 93 are currently bookable to travelers.

Every rental unit must pass a rigorous inspection and approval process by hotel management, so you know you’re getting the best quality and highest standard.

The Rooms

The full-sized kitchen and separate dining area makes it easy to stock up and families with children will appreciate the fridge space for much-needed snack storage.

The rooms offer ample living space to accommodate four people (the suite’s max occupancy) without stepping on each other’s toes and feature plenty of storage, with multiple closets throughout including a walk-in closet off the main bedroom.

Carol McPherson

All room rates include access to the complimentary breakfast at The Beach Club. Breakfast is served as a buffet and includes American-style options like pancakes and scrambled eggs alongside Caribbean favorites such as stewed saltfish and roast bakes.

Tip: While The Palms is the only restaurant that requires reservations, it is suggested to call ahead to the other dining venues for parties greater than eight to ensure they have time to prepare your space.

Callaloo Beach Bar and Grill

Dine with your toes in the sand at the newly renovated beachfront Callaloo Beach Bar and Grill. Each meal comes with a basket of plantain and breadfruit chips served with a side of perfectly spicy salsa.

The Beach Club

A short walk down the beach from Callaloo is The Beach Club, where guests can order from an à la carte lunch and dinner menu in addition to the breakfast buffet. In the evenings, enjoy live entertainment from local musicians and performers on a patio illuminated by glowing tiki torches.

Tip: Take a peak over the railing at the guide lights in the marina just off the right side of the deck. At night, you’ll catch schools of fish swirling around the water, attracted by the green glow.

The Palms

The Palms, located just off the main lobby, serves up a fresh seasonal menu that can be enjoyed indoors or on an outdoor patio overlooking the central marina.

The Coffee Shop

The Coffee Shop is located in the main lobby next to The Palms and is perfect for guests looking for a grab-and-go option before heading out for the day.

The Turquoise Beach Bar

Hop straight from the sand and onto a barstool at The Turquoise Beach Bar. Sharing a patio with The Beach Club, beachgoers can relax with a mid-afternoon Piton Shandy or kick off the evening with a creative cocktail.

The Viscount Lounge

The Viscount Lounge offers small bites and signature drinks just off the main lobby across from The Palms.

Other

In addition to traditional room service, private chefs are available to prepare meals in-room on request. You can also have your kitchen stocked with your favorite drinks and snacks upon arrival with The Landings’ Personal Pantry Service

Tip: Guests are welcome to bring back their fresh catch of the day and have it fried up in classic Saint Lucian style by the resort’s expert chefs.

Off Resort Excursions

While it’s true that you won’t need to leave the property during your stay, don’t miss out on the many exciting off-resort excursions around the island. Here are a few stand out options:

Tip: Many excursions can be booked through the hotel. For any independently booked activities, the Concierge Team can assist with arranging transportation.

Explore Pigeon Island National Park

Distance from The Landings: 4 minute drive or 15 minute walk

Pigeon Island National Park is connected to the main island via the manmade Pigeon Island Causeway. Take in the park’s history amongst the 18th and 19th century military ruins and hike to the top of the two peaks of the park, Fort Rodney and Signal Peak, for an incredible 360-degree photo op.

The Landings offers guided hikes of the park twice a week with the option to schedule additional hikes upon request.

Visit the Sulphur Springs in Soufriere

Distance from The Landings: 1.5 – 2 hours drive from The Landings

The Sulphur Springs in Soufriere are much more relaxing than their nickname—‘The World’s Only Drive-In Volcano’—makes them sound. The crater of this dormant volcano is now home to several natural mud baths, where travelers can unwind and take advantage of the mud’s detoxifying properties.

Wander the Diamond Falls Botanical Garden

Distance from The Landings: 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours

The six-acre Diamond Falls Botanical Garden in Soufriere invites guests to learn about the wide variety of tropical birds and flora within the park, wonder at the colorful mineral-rich waters of Diamond Falls, and bathe in the on-site hot springs.

Hike the Pitons

Distance from The Landings: 2 hours drive

The dual peaks of the Pitons tower over the southwestern coast of Saint Lucia, just south of Soufriere. Gros Piton, the larger of the two volcanic spires, rises 2,530 feet above sea level and is a bucket list stop for many hikers. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004, the area is rich in biodiversity, including nearly thirty endemic bird species.

It is strongly recommended to complete this hike with an experienced professional guide.

Party the Night Away at Gros Islet Jump-Up

Distance from The Landings: 4 minute drive

For over 50 years, the Gros Islet Jump-Up has welcomed travelers and locals alike to dance, eat, and shop from dozens of local vendors that line the streets each Friday night.

Take a Coastal Tour

Coastal tours are the best way to take in the island scenery and get up close with the region’s incredible marine life. Tours include romantic private sunset cruises, group whale watches, and day trips to Martinique as well as half- and full-day sailing charters.

Steeped in history, and with a grandeur that rivals the neighboring monuments, the new Waldorf Astoria Washington DC is a welcome addition to the capital’s luxury hotel scene.

Housed in the Old Post Office, a landmark building built in 1899, the space underwent many transformations before opening as the controversial Trump Hotel in 2016. In 2022, the hotel was rebranded as the Waldorf Astoria, marking the brand’s first foray into Washington, DC.

This historic building has been painstakingly restored to its former glory and added modern updates, exceptional dining options, impeccable service, and a wealth of amenities, that make the hotel a comfortable sanctuary in the heart of the city.

The Location

Aerial view of the Capitol Building and surrounding architecture in Washington DC

The Waldorf Astoria Washington DC occupies a prime location on Pennsylvania Avenue. Famous Washington attractions, including The White House, US Capitol, National Mall, and Washington Monument are within walking distance.

Public transportation is easily accessible if you want to explore more of the city—the hotel overlooks the Federal Triangle Metro station.

One of DC’s best places to visit is actually located within the Waldorf—the former Old Post Office tower, which is one of the city’s highest observation decks, offers 360-degree views of the city for free.

Amenities

Unexpected amenities designed to anticipate guests’ every need will surprise and delight visitors at every turn.

The hotel’s spacious fitness center features state-of-the-art cardio and strength training equipment, along with key items designed to aid in post-workout recovery: chilled bottles of Evian water, scented towels, and bananas.

A team of helpful concierges is ready to assist travelers with everything from directions to restaurant reservations. Guests will receive texts throughout their stay to make sure everything is going well and to see if the concierges can be of service.

Full-sized bottles of Aesop toiletries are found in every room, and are formulated to work on all hair and skin types, so everyone can enjoy the amenities.

The Rooms

Sitting area and bedroom in guest accommodations at the Waldorf Astoria, Washington DC

The Waldorf Astoria has 263 guest rooms and suites, each of which is decorated with the hotel’s rich royal blue tones, sparkling chandeliers, and marble bathrooms.

Suites at the hotel are incredibly opulent, drawing celebrities and political powerhouses looking for a luxurious stay. The Waldorf Townhouse, a 6,300 sq. ft. suite that sprawls over two stories, is the largest suite in the city and features its own private entrance.

We stayed in the Nancy Hanks Suite, a spacious (1,645 sq. ft) apartment-style suite with a separate living room and bedroom. Tucked away within the suite are cozy nooks for working and reading that can be closed off with heavy velvet curtains for privacy (chandeliers in each keep things bright).

The room’s elegantly classic features have been updated with modern technology, including remote-controlled blackout curtains and a hidden television that rises from the foot of the bed with a touch of a button.

Named after the former Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, Nancy Hanks, who was credited with preserving the building, the suite features unique art showcasing the Old Post Office’s history.

Dining

Peacock Alley restaurant at the Waldorf Astoria, Washington DC

A variety of fine dining options make the Waldorf a must-visit destination for DC foodies.

Peacock Alley

The Waldorf’s stunning lobby, home to the in-house restaurant Peacock Alley, is worth a visit even if you’re not staying in the hotel.

Set in the hotel’s airy nine-story atrium, the soaring glass-enclosed space lets light shine down on preserved original details from the Old Post Office. The atrium’s decor changes frequently and is particularly spectacular during the holidays and Cherry Blossom season.

Against the beautiful backdrop, the Waldorf’s main restaurant, Peacock Alley serves an eclectic menu all day long that draws in locals for power lunches and post-work dinners.

Start your day off right with a healthy breakfast of fresh-squeezed orange juice and locally-sourced Virginia farm fruit salad, or indulge later in the day with a shared artisanal cheese platter, on-theme postman’s burger, and a cheekily-named cocktail like the Power Suit (gin, French vermouth, sherry, and orange bitters).

If you’re looking for something a little more exclusive to sip on, a glass-enclosed tasting room off of the lobby offers the chance to sample special whiskeys, bourbons, wines, and other hard-to-find liquors.

The Bazaar By José Andrés

Michelin-starred chef and noted philanthropist José Andrés knows how to draw in a crowd, and his restaurant at the Waldorf, The Bazaar, is no exception. This buzzy eatery is open for breakfast, lunch, afternoon snacks, and dinner, and you’ll need to book far in advance if you want to score a table at a prime time. Hotel guests may luck out with a walk-in table at the bar, which is easier to come by.

The innovative cuisine is worth the wait—expect treats inspired by Andrés’ Spanish heritage, like the tortilla de patas, as well as dishes that give a nod to the location, like “José’s Favorite Waldorf, Salad”.

Sushi Nakazawa

For a special night out, reserve a seat at the sushi counter or in the dining room at Sushi Nakazawa. The Michelin-starred restaurant offers a 20-course nigiri Omakase set menu that will delight any sushi aficionado.

The Spa

Two rooms, a massage room and the salt room, at the Spa at Waldorf Astoria, Washington DC
Waldorf Astoria Washington DC

Step into the Waldorf Astoria spa and feel your shoulders instantly drop from around your ears and your stress melt away. The spa features six private treatment rooms, a Himalayan Salt Therapy Room, and The Sanctuary (a pre- or post-treatment area with dimmed lighting, private resting cocoons, soothing water features, snacks, and beverages that eases the transition back to the real world).

Massages are personalized for each guest, with custom scents on offer to enhance the experience. Or, opt for one of the spa’s indulgent services like a Vitamin C Glow body treatment or Oxygen Boost facial.

Price and How to Book

Room rates start at around $500 per night and can be booked on SmarterTravel Hotels

Welcome to Newport’s newest luxury getaway, the Brenton Hotel. Built in 2020, this 57-room property occupies the best location in town, right on Newport Harbor.

Inside the boutique hotel, a coastal theme with nautical blue detailing evokes a relaxing seaside feel that will put you straight into vacation mode.

Guests are spoiled with unexpected and whimsical amenities from the moment they step through the doors until they check out.

The Location

The Brenton Hotel Newport Rhode Island

Set on the corner of America’s Cup Avenue and Long Wharf, the Brenton is centrally located to the waterfront as well as downtown Newport’s many shops and restaurants.

Land and sea tours depart from stops just outside the hotel’s door, making the Brenton the perfect base for exploring the area.

Amenities

The Brenton Hotel aims to give guests a luxurious stay that’s on par with what they might have experienced visiting one of the famous Newport mansions during the Gilded Age.

Available amenities include:

  • Cruises on the hotel’s private Hinckley Picnic Boat
  • Weekly tailgate at Newport Polo for hotel guests during polo season
  • Morning yoga classes on the rooftop
  • Staff-led biking, running, and walking tours
  • Complimentary bike loans
  • Advanced access to tee times at Newport National Golf Club
  • In-room Peloton bikes delivered on demand
  • Bulgari toiletries
  • Pet-friendly perks like treats, beds, and dog-walking
  • In-room minibar with free juice and water
  • Luxury spa
  • Seersucker robes
  • Guest pantries stocked with free ice cream on every floor
  • Nightly turndown service with sweet treats

The Rooms

Bedroom and sitting room in a suite at The Brenton Hotel New Port Rhode Island
The Brenton Hotel Newport Rhode Island

Stepping into one of the Brenton’s guest rooms would feel like boarding a luxury yacht if it wasn’t for the room’s spacious size, which is bigger than anything you’d find on a boat.

Nautically-inspired rooms are decorated with wood paneling, gold accents, and calming blue touches.

We stayed in a Water View King room, a truly airy 450 square foot space with a separate living/relaxing area.

The king bed itself was worth writing home about, with a handstitched mattress from Mattress Concierge draped in plush, custom-made 400-thread count Matouck bedding. From the comfort of the bed, you can watch through the room’s oversized windows as ships come in and out of the harbor.

A large living area with a desk, chair, table, and couch is perfectly situated next to the window so you can admire the view while you work or dine.

For even more space, book one of the Brenton’s two-bedroom suites, which measure over 1,200 square feet.

Dining

Dining at The Brenton focuses on locally harvested food that highlights what’s in season in New England.

The Brenton has one main restaurant, the Living Room, and a penthouse bar, The Rooftop.

The Living Room

The Living Room restaurant at Brenton Hotel Newport Rhode Island

Designed for socializing, the open and light-filled Living Room features a long bar along with plenty of low tables and cushy chairs. Open for breakfast and dinner daily, The Living Room’s small plates-style menu encourages sharing—which is a good thing, since there are more delectable-sounding options that you’ll want to try than one person can eat.

Seafood harvested from the waters just outside the windows is the star of the menu here—go for the Rhode Island Stuffies or New England Oysters served with a sake mignonette.

An innovative cocktail menu featuring drinks like the Chill Factor (a refreshing blend of cucumber, mint, gin, lime, and aloe vera) offers plenty of choices for pairing depending on what you’ve ordered to eat.

The Brenton hasn’t forgotten about its pet guests—a special Top Dogs menu is available for in-room dining and at the Living Room, featuring canine-approved dishes like grilled chicken and rice.

The Rooftop

The beautifully designed rooftop bar offers panoramic views over the water and downtown Newport. Open daily from 4 pm until sunset, the bar is stocked with craft cocktails and plenty of lounge chairs, making it the best place for a sundowner in Newport.

The large and lively outdoor space offers cornhole, foosball, ping pong, and even a six-hole putting green to keep guests entertained while they sip on spritzes and local craft beers.

Price and How to Book

Room rates start at around $230 per night and can be booked on SmarterTravel Hotels

Can’t decide between a relaxing lakeside getaway or an active mountain vacation? Plan a trip to New Hampshire, home to the White Mountains and the Lakes Region, where you can have both in one weekend.

With hundreds of miles of hiking trails, 93 state park properties, and plenty of lakes and beaches to explore, the Granite State is a paradise for outdoor adventurers.

Follow this guide to plan the perfect New Hampshire summer weekend trip.

Friday

Mount Washington Hotel exterior on left. Mount Washington Hotel room on the right.

Northern New Hampshire is an easy drive from Boston—you can save your vacation time, leave after work on Friday, and arrive in time for dinner.

Check into the Omni Mount Washington Resort, New Hampshire’s most iconic hotel. The sprawling, red-roofed property can be spotted from many viewpoints in the state. This historic resort was built in 1902 and has since undergone many renovations to make it the timelessly elegant property it is today. The most recent renovation expanded the hotel to add 69 modern rooms and suites in the Presidential Wing—book a room in this section to enjoy mountain views from your private outdoor space, oversized soaking tubs, and a brand-new feel.

The Omni’s main dining room was recently updated as well. Reserve a table by the window in this elegant space (there is a dress code) for a special dinner. The dining room’s picture windows offer stunning sunset views over the mountains and surrounding forest while you eat.

Saturday

Center Harbor Inn exterior on left, Center Harbor Inn room on right.

Start your day off right with a buffet breakfast in the Omni’s main dining room, or, for lighter fare, take advantage of the Omni’s complimentary coffee service and pair a cup with a pastry (don’t miss the incredible cinnamon rolls) from the hotel’s Morsels cafe.

New Hampshire is by far the best state in New England for hiking. Experience a classic New Hampshire 4,000-footer by tackling Mount Eisenhower. Part of the White Mountains’ famous Presidential Range, this moderately challenging trek will reward you with 360-degree views at the top. The 3.3-mile (one-way) Edmund’s Path trail is the most direct route to the summit.

By the time you’ve finished the hike, you’ll be ready for a hearty lunch. Refuel at Wicked Fresh Craft Burgers in North Conway. Get the milkshake (made with local milk) and the fries (topped with fresh herbs)—you’ve earned it.

Check into the Center Harbor Inn. Perched above a private sandy beach on Lake Winnipesaukee, this hotel puts you in the heart of New Hampshire’s Lakes Region. Opt for a water-view room with a private balcony for a truly luxurious stay.

Head down to the hotel’s outdoor hot tub where you can soak your tired muscles while overlooking the water.

Walk across the street to Poggio’s Craft Kitchen & Taphouse for dinner, where chef Kaylon Sweet serves up an ever-changing menu based on fresh, local ingredients. If the weather’s nice, sit outside in the restaurant’s beautiful new biergaten space.

Sunday

top: Hiking signs for different trails. bottom left: the mansion at Castle in the Clouds. bottom right: interior of the mansion with a table, couch and rug.
Castle in the Clouds

Stroll over to Gusto’s Italian Cafe for a leisurely Sunday morning breakfast. Grab a sandwich and coffee—and don’t forget to add in one of the homemade pastries involving Nutella—and bring your feast back for a picnic on Center Harbor Inn’s private beach.

After carboloading and caffeinating, rent a kayak from the hotel and paddle around Lake Winnipesaukee before checking out.

Take a short drive to Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough, New Hampshire. Built as a private estate in 1913, this elaborate property once spanned an incredible 6,300 acres. Now, the mansion and grounds occupy 135 acres of prime real estate overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee.

Tour the carefully-preserved 16-room Lucknow estate for a fascinating example of how the wealthy lived in the early 20th century before having lunch in the on-site restaurants (housed in the converted stables).

Cap off your trip with a walk through Castle in the Cloud’s many scenic walking trails—the short (0.8 mile) Brook Walk trail takes you past seven beautiful waterfalls.

Ever dreamed of having your own mansion on Cape Cod? Book a room at Ocean Edge Resort and you can pretend that you do (at least for a little while). Originally built in 1907 as a manor house for an influential local family, the property that’s now Ocean Edge was one of the most expensive homes in the United States at the time.

In the 1980s, the main mansion was modernized and converted into the impressive hotel that stands in Brewster today.

Set on 429 acres perched above Cape Cod Bay, Ocean Edge is split into two distinct sections: The Mansion (upscale hotel rooms) and The Villages (one- to three- bedroom apartment-style rentals).

The Location

Ocean Edge is located on the lower end of Cape Cod, in Brewster, Massachusetts. The unique setting is perfect for getting out and exploring the best of the area. The resort’s private beach, Bay Pines, is just steps away from the rooms at The Mansion, and the crown jewel of the area, the 25-mile scenic Cape Cod Rail Trail multi-use path, runs right past The Villages.

Amenities

Amenities at Ocean Edge are designed to help guests unwind and get outside. You’ll have five pools to choose from (three outdoor and two indoor) along with hot tubs for soaking.

There are plenty of opportunities to show off your racquet skills on any of the six pickleball or nine tennis courts, and lessons are available for both sports if you want to hone your skills.

Kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are available to rent at Ocean Edge’s private beach.

Explore the surrounding area by bike with one of the resort’s Freedom Flyer Bike rentals—perfect for riding the nearby Cape Cod Rail Trail.

Ocean Edge’s private golf course is a huge draw for avid players. The 18-hole Troon Privé course is the only Nicklaus-designed one on the Cape.

If the weather’s not cooperating but you still want to get active, there are fully-equipped fitness centers available at both the main hotel and villages.

Other amenities include:

  • Live music
  • Complimentary shuttle from The Villages to Crosby Landing Beach
  • Private beach with chairs, towels, and food/drink service
  • Meet & Greet Clinics with Cape Cod Baseball Summer League team The Brewster Whitecaps on select summer dates
  • Private beach fires with s’mores (For a fee)
  • Edgeventure Youth Dropoff Program (Price varies)
  • Free WiFi

With seven bars and restaurants—plus room service—to choose from, there’s no need to leave the resort (or even your room) if you don’t want to.

Ocean Terrace

Enjoy elevated New England fare against the backdrop of Cape Cod Bay from this large outdoor patio space. Ocean Terrace’s menu focuses on fresh, in-season ingredients like the Spring Pea Risotto or East Coast Halibut served with honey truffle beurre blanc sauce.

The Roscommon Room

Named after Roscommon County in Ireland, this refined Irish pub is the indoor space for the Ocean Terrace, with the same menu and similar views available.

Bayzo’s Pub

This lively English-style pub serves up comfort dishes including the classic fish and chips, and draws in guests with live music most nights.

The Beach Bar

Open seasonally, The Beach Bar is the place to be for a summer sundowner. Take the walkway out over the dunes to find a small bar from where you’ll have the best views around.

Linx Tavern

Located in the golf course clubhouse, Linx Tavern offers casual drinks and dining to golfers and non-golfers alike.

Shark Bah

The poolside Shark Bah serves up everything you need for the perfect pool day, from frozen drinks to soft-serve ice cream. (Open seasonally.)

The Front Lawn

Ocean Edge takes advantage of its sprawling green space by opening The Front Lawn during the summer. There’s plenty of room to spread out under the tented spaces, plus an outdoor oven, lawn games, and a big drink menu.

Price and How to Book

Rooms at Ocean Edge start around $150 and can be booked at SmarterTravel Hotels
