A trip to the infamous city of love will leave you in awe of its beauty and atmosphere. Paris is steeped in history and immersed in a rich culture that attracts millions of visitors each year, for very good reason. Without a doubt, during your visit, you’ll find yourself being enchanted by the Eiffel Tower, stunned by the Seine, and astonished by the architecture. There is no better place to enjoy a romantic getaway, a cultural solo trip, or an unforgettable family holiday.

Whether you’re looking to taste some authentic, buttery croissants, see some magnificent sculptures and paintings, relax in the well-maintained gardens, or tour the sights, this city simply has it all. From famous galleries and museums like the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay to the beautiful buildings of Notre Dame and the Arc de Triomphe ー, Paris stands out as an undeniably one-of-a-kind place.

Lock Eyes with the Mona Lisa at The Louvre

The famous Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci is currently housed in the Louvre Museum. This popular work of art draws large crowds, so if you want an unobstructed look at this portrait, a great option could be to book tickets for a last-entry tour that allows you to skip the line.

If you’re hoping to make the most of your visit to the Louvre, there are countless other priceless works of art and artifacts that are worth seeing. The museum boasts an impressive collection consisting of the famous Venus de Milo sculpture, Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People, and Géricault’s The Raft of the Medusa paintings, among many others.

Hotel recommendation:

Hôtel Moliere: Spas, massages, facials, and saunas are all on offer at this high-end, 4-star hotel option. The boutique hotel has an elegant design, as well as spacious rooms.

Be Dazzled by the Eiffel Tower

Gustave Eiffel’s world-famous Eiffel Tower has essentially become synonymous with the city of Paris and is one of the most visited monuments in the world. However, seeing its photo on a postcard pales compared to witnessing its unique design in real life. You can climb the metal masterpiece from 9 AM until midnight, either going up to the second floor or straight to the top, using elevators or stairs. The prices vary depending on how far you wish to go up, how you want to go up, and your age.

You can also visit one of the restaurants and bars on the different levels of the tower. Aside from the buffets found on the first two floors and the esplanade, there are establishments that offer incredible food, delicious drinks, and spectacular views, including Madame Brasserie by Thierry Marx, The Jules Vernes by Frédéric Anton (one MICHELIN star), and The Champagne Bar

Under the moonlight, the tower is illuminated by twinkling lights creating a magical, luminous display for onlookers. The 20,000 bulbs sparkle for five minutes every hour from dusk to 11:45 PM, giving you plenty of time and opportunities to enjoy the light show.

Hotel recommendation:

Hotel Eiffel Kennedy: Staying near the Eiffel Tower often means that hotel prices will be much higher. However, this charming 3-star hotel will give you a comfortable, central stay without breaking the bank.

Admire Notre Dame

Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral, France

The famous cathedral has been at the center of multiple historical events, including the coronation of Napoleon as Emperor, and holds a special place in the heart of many Parisians. Tragically, whilst restoration work was being done in April 2019, the roof caught fire, causing significant damage to this beloved building. Nevertheless, most of the structure has stayed intact, and plans are to reopen it fully to the public in December 2024.

It is still worth a visit, even if you plan to visit Paris before the official reopening date. Whilst the towers and treasuries are currently inaccessible to visitors, you can access the cathedral’s parvis and archaeological crypt.

Hotel recommendation:

Hotel Europe Saint Severin Paris: This 3-star hotel has rustic decor, a homely feel, and a lower price point than many hotels in the same area. It could also hardly be any closer to Notre Dame, making it a great location for those wanting to stay nearby.

Stroll the Luxembourg Gardens

Paris - Luxembourg Palace

Walking through the Luxembourg Gardens provides a little bit of relief from the hustle and bustle of the city, giving you a chance to relax. Its charm draws both locals and tourists thanks to its calming atmosphere, exquisite flower beds, and manicured lawns. It is the perfect place to stretch your legs, enjoy family time or take someone on a romantic date.

The gardens themselves are overlooked by the regal Luxembourg Palace and were inspired by the Boboli Gardens in Florence, which can be seen from the well-maintained areas and outdoor sculptures dotted around. There are also greenhouses, areas to play pétanque (a French sport similar to boules), and beehives.

Hotel recommendation:

Hotel Le Six: This 4-star hotel has a more modern vibe to it and some stellar reviews from other visitors. You can enjoy getting pampered in the spa, relaxing in the steam room, and getting a drink at the swanky bar.

Take a Seine River Boat Tour

While walking along the river is a wonderful way to soak up the sights and enjoy a relaxing stroll, booking a riverboat tour makes a trip to Paris even more enchanting. There are countless companies offering their services, but most will take you past the main landmarks of the city and give you scenic views, which you can enjoy in style. Some also offer meals and champagne, adding extra glamorous detail to your day.

Booking a trip during the day allows you to see everything in broad daylight, but the city truly comes alive at night.  For the most dreamy experience, you can book a dinner cruise where you can treat your tastebuds to some delicious dishes while being serenaded by violinists and pianists.

Hotel recommendation:

Juliana Hotel Paris: Another 5-star option with unique decor that has been meticulously designed. It offers a spa, a fitness center, and individually decorated rooms, so no two are the same!

Enjoy the Artwork at the Musée d’Orsay

Sculptures from the six continents of the World outside the Musée d'Orsay in Paris

The Louvre may be the more famous museum to visit, but the Musée d’Orsay should be just as high up on your bucket list! The building itself was converted from a Beaux-Arts style railway station, creating an interior that looks so original. However, the museum is more than just that, given that it houses a huge amount of masterpieces from mainly French artists and is renowned for having a rich collection of Impressionist art. It houses twenty-four of Van Gogh’s paintings (including the stunning Starry Night), eighty-six paintings by Monet, and fifty-six pieces by Cézanne.

The museum is open every day, apart from Mondays, and offers a variety of guided tours, workshops, and changing exhibitions. If you’re lucky enough, you may even be able to attend a concert during the evening or at lunchtime in this house of culture. Make sure to check the website and book well in advance in order to avoid disappointment.

Hotel recommendation:

Hotel Montalembert: This 5-star option is located only an 8-minute walk away from the Musée d’Orsay. It offers spa services, babysitting for an extra charg, and ornately-decorated surroundings.

Explore Montmartre

Basilique Sacré Coeur Montmartre Paris France

This bohemian area of Paris has historically captivated artists and creatives, creating an atmosphere that still inspires many to this day. The place is simply gorgeous, with its winding streets and cobbled surfaces, it feels distinctly like a quaint village. Here you can visit the Sacré-Cœur Basilica on top of the Montmartre hill, either by walking up 197 steps or, if your legs are tired from all of the exploring, you can take the funicular.

This isn’t the only thing that the village has to offer, though.  There is the Place du Tertre, where you can look at the wonderful paintings and drawings of local artists. Also, the Moulin Rouge is located here, along with the “I Love You” Wall (Le Mur des Je t’aime). This piece of art has “I love you” written all over jet-black rock in over 250 languages.

Hotel recommendation:

Mercure Paris Montmartre Sacré Coeur: A reasonably-priced, 4-star hotel that is close to the Moulin Rouge, the metro, and the Sacré-Cœur Basilica. There is also a garden, fitness space, and terrace.

Experience the Atmosphere of The Latin Quarter

Paris Pantheon
Nikitin Mikhail | Adobe Stock

This area is one of the most ancient in the city, meaning that it is full of history and culture. The Pantheon can be found in The Latin Quarter, where honored men and women important to France are interred or commemorated, including the writers Victor Hugo and Emile Zola.

Paris’ Natural History Museum is also located in this quarter, along with the attaching Jardin des Plantes, which is a botanical garden that is free to visit. The only thing you may have to pay for is entry to the zoo, where you can meet fascinating exotic animals.

Aside from the endless exciting places to see, the atmosphere is second to none. There is a thriving jazz scene in this district, so you can’t miss out on going to one of the many jazz or cabaret clubs found here.

Hotel recommendation:

Hotel d’Aubusson: Originally, this hotel was a 17th-century mansion and is the epitome of luxury. This 4-star hotel’s central location places you around many places of interest and welcomes you back with superb interior design and fantastic service after a long day of sightseeing.

Do Retail Therapy at the Galeries Lafayette

Galeries Lafayette department store

This shopping mall is one of the most recognizable in the city thanks to its distinctively lavish interior design in the style of Art Nouveau. From an enormous glass dome to gilded features to illuminating lights, it is truly a breathtaking sight! If you’re a luxury fanatic, there are plenty of places to indulge and treat yourself to a designer souvenir. You can buy items from Dior, Chloé, Hermès, Chanel, Céline, and many more French and international fashion brands.

Once you’re feeling exhausted from carrying around all those shopping bags, there are lots of places to sit, enjoy a coffee or order a delicious meal.

Hotel recommendation:

Hôtel Excelsior Opéra: A 3-star hotel with a lot of character. All of the rooms are designed in a simple, contemporary style, with the comfort of their guests in mind. They also all have flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi.

Visit the Arc De Triomphe

Paris Arc de Triomphe View - Majestic Structure

This commemorative monument dedicated to the victories of Napoleon’s army is globally recognized for its distinctive arch and elaborate sculptures and engravings. Those wishing to climb to the top will get a staggering view of one of the most beautiful streets in Paris: the Champs-Élysées, as well as the Eiffel Tower and The Louvre. The top is also accessible by elevator, making it an activity everyone can enjoy. Remember to book tickets in advance so that you can skip the queue and keep your itinerary for the rest of the day on track!

Hotel recommendation:

Hotel EKTA: A lovely 4-star hotel with 70s-inspired decor, only a stone’s throw away from the Arc de Triomphe. You’ll love the funky fabrics and electric artwork that the hotel has chosen.

Peeling back the foil on my in-flight meal always leaves me regretting not packing food for my trip. However, most easy-to-pack foods are either not satisfying, or not that great-tasting (hello, chalky protein bars).

To see if there was a better way to fuel up on the road, I tried out Huel, a line of nutritionally complete portable meals

What is Huel?

Line of products from Huel, from protein shakes to full meal replacements
Huel

Huel is a line of plant-based meals. The brand offers powders (which can be made into shakes), ready-to-drink shakes, protein bars, snack bars, and instant meals. I tried the peanut butter and chocolate flavors of Huel Black plus the Thai green curry and yellow coconut curry flavors of Huel Hot & Savory.

To make Huel Hot & Savory, you simply add boiling water, stir, and cover. You’ll have a hot meal in five minutes. (It can also be microwaved for a faster prep.)

The Huel Black powder is mixed with water and shaken to quickly create a meal replacement drink.

What Makes Huel Different?

Huel bills its products as being “nutritionally complete” so that each serving is a balanced blend of protein, fat, carbohydrates, and fiber designed to give you lasting energy and keep you full. The Huel Black shakes contain 40 grams of protein per serving, and the Hot & Savory meals contain around 25 grams of protein depending on the flavor.

Both products are plant-based, use sustainable ingredients, and include 27 vitamins and minerals in every serving.

How Does Huel Measure Up?

Woman drinking from a Huel water bottle wearing Huel merch (left) and close up of woman wearing Huel merch eating a Huel hot meal
Huel

Ease of Use: 8/10

Huel offers convenient nutrition for long travel days, flights, road trips, and camping. The meals are easy to make while traveling and very portable. Before I trip, I decant servings of Huel into individual plastic bags, and then buy a cup of hot water and a spoon at a coffee shop or gas station to make the Hot & Savory meals. The shakes are easy to make as well—just add water and shake in Huel’s shaker cup.

Taste: 9/10

The Huel curries I tried were surprisingly tasty for instant meals. It was also really nice to have a hot meal available when traveling or camping, and made me feel a lot better than if I was eating an in-flight meal or greasy fast food.

I also enjoyed the shakes, and found creative ways to use the powder (like mixing the peanut butter flavor into oatmeal for extra protein).

Cost: 9/10

Huel Hot & Ready costs approximately $30 per bag, which breaks down to about $3.76 per meal—definitely cheaper than buying food at the airport or at a restaurant. Huel Black costs around $95 per bag (34 meals per bag).

Huel Pros:

  • Easy way to eat healthy while traveling
  • Great for camping
  • Tastes delicious
  • Easy to prepare
  • No cooking utensils/microwave/stove required
  • Helpful for people traveling with allergies to have safe meals
  • Nutritionally complete
  • Plant-based
  • No artificial sweeteners
  • Many flavors are gluten-free
  • Contains 27 vitamins and minerals

Huel Cons:

  • Huel Black can be gritty tasting when made in the shaker (much better when made in a blender, which isn’t ideal for traveling)
  • Two-bag minimum when buying Huel Black on their website, and three-bag minimum for Huel Hot & Savory

It’s also worth noting that most cruise lines have implemented flexible cancellation policies, including full refunds or future cruise credits.

Las Vegas can dazzle, impress, and surprise.  Here are 7 weird Las Vegas facts you may not know. From the truth about where the Las Vegas Strip really is (hint: It’s not Las Vegas) to its diner-based wedding ceremonies, here’s the scoop on what really happens in Sin City.

Editor’s note: Save these ideas for when it’s safe to travel again, and always follow all COVID-19 restrictions, rules and safety regulations both at your destination and upon returning home.

The Las Vegas Strip Isn’t Actually in Las Vegas

The Las Vegas Strip

The Las Vegas Strip is a paradise for many. In actuality, the Las Vegas Strip is in Paradise.

Most of the 4.2-mile Las Vegas Strip (a drag that includes popular Las Vegas hotels like MGM Grand, Caesars Palace, and Wynn Las Vegas) is actually in the neighboring town of Paradise.

Sex Work is Illegal in Las Vegas

Despite the many signs promoting the sex industry in Las Vegas, sex work is in fact prohibited in Sin City and the rest of Clark County.

It isn’t only illegal in Las Vegas, it’s also banned in Nevada’s other major city, Reno. Cities in other Nevada counties, however, permit sex work.

Las Vegas Hotels – 150,000 of Them!

MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada

There are 147,238 Las Vegas hotel rooms, according to figures supplied by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. The average nightly room rate is currently $129.

With those figures and without inflation, it’ll take a Las Vegas aficionado nearly 404 years and $19 million to stay in every Las Vegas hotel room.

Las Vegas Casinos Swap Competing Casino Chips

For those feeling a hot streak coming on while at Caesars Palace but who have only a pocketful of MGM Grand chips, fret not–it’s likely the house will take your “foreign chips” just the same.

While most Las Vegas casino hotels will swap out competitors’ casino chips, this privilege is only honored in Nevada.

Las Vegas: Bright Lights, Big City

An icon on the Las Vegas Strip, the Luxor Light Beam at the Luxor Las Vegas is now operating at only half-strength from what it illuminated in its 1993 debut. Not that this distinction is visible to the naked eye.

Arguably the brightest light beam on Earth, it’s said that the beacon is visible from as far as 100 miles away.

The House Wins; Powerball Players, Not So Much

You’ll catch nary a sight of a Powerball or scratch ticket in the self-proclaimed Gambling Capital of the World. Why? Despite legalizing casino gaming in 1931, the sale of lottery tickets is still prohibited in the state of Nevada.

You Can Get Married Pretty Much Anywhere in Las Vegas

A stack of flapjacks and a quickie wedding may both sound like great ideas after a night of partying in Las Vegas. Luckily, the breakfast food chain diner Denny’s offers spontaneous couples a side of nuptials with their Grand Slams.

At $199, the wedding package includes a wedding officiant, use of the diner’s chapel, a pancake wedding cake, a Champagne toast, and two breakfasts.

Still dreaming of that fresh pasta you drooled over in Bologna, the mango lassi that cooled you down in Delhi, or that Turkish coffee that woke you up after a red-eye flight? You can recreate these and other world-famous delicacies at home with these cool kitchen gadgets.

NutriBullet Blender Combo

Smoothies, soups, sauces, and more—the NutriBullet Blender Combo does it all. This small but powerful kitchen gadget can grind up everything from nuts to vegetables in seconds. The combo set lets you blend into either a 64-ounce pitcher, a 24-ounce travel cup with a handle, or a 32-ounce cup. With multiple speeds and 1200 watts of power, there’s no limit to what you can blend up.

Oxo Silicone Egg Poachers

Remember that bed and breakfast that served up the most delicious poached eggs? And then you tried to recreate them at home but ended up with a watery mess? Oxo’s Silicone Egg Poachers make it easy to make poached eggs at home—just place the gadget in boiling water and crack an egg in. The holes allow water to flow around (but not drown) the eggs. When they’re done, just pull them out using the tab. This simple tool even collapses so it won’t take much room in your kitchen.

Capresso Coffee Team Pro Plus

Coffee is always better when someone else makes it, but in the case of the Capresso Coffee Team Pro Plus, it’s almost like having a personal barista in-house. With the press of a button, this coffee maker will grind fresh beans directly into the filter and then automatically brew up to 12 cups of coffee. You can change the slow burr grind setting for different kinds of beans, and a charcoal water filter helps make your coffee taste even better.

Dual Cheese Raclette Table Grill

If you’ve ever been to Switzerland and feasted on raclette, you know how ingenious this dish is (it’s literally a plate of melted cheese served with a few token vegetables). With the Dual Cheese Raclette Table Grill, you can now have a raclette party at home (a cheese party is the best kind of party, right?). This gadget has eight raclette pans so you can experiment with different cheese and topping combinations.

Oxo Adjustable Temperature Kettle

If you want to make the perfect cup of tea, don’t make it in the microwave or even on the stovetop. The best tea comes from having the temperature right so that you don’t burn the leaves (for green tea, you want 180 degrees Fahrenheit, for mint you want 194 degrees, and so on). Oxo’s Adjustable Temperature Kettle lets you set the temperature with the twist of a dial so you get the perfect cup every time. The kettle is made from a cordless BPA-free borosilicate glass that’s safe for boiling water.

Lodge Cast Iron Pizza Pan

You don’t have a wood-fired pizza oven, but that’s okay. You can create a gourmet pie with this nifty Cast Iron Pizza Pan that can be used in the oven, on the stovetop, on the grill, or even over a campfire. Turn out crispy pizza crusts, roast vegetables, or even bake cookies on this tool—it’s seasoned with oil for a natural non-stick finish.

Mickey Mouse Waffle Maker

Bring back fond Disney World memories at every breakfast with the Disney Classic Mickey Mouse Electric Waffle Maker. This easy-to-use gadget serves up perfectly shaped Mickey waffles—plus it’s non-stick so you won’t be scrubbing batter out of the ears for hours each morning.

Hurom Cutting Board

Slice and dice without worrying about germs on the Hurom Cutting Board. Made from a naturally antibacterial Japanese cypress wood, the cutting board helps prevent mold and bacteria growth naturally. The wood is also good for knives, and won’t chip them. Bonus: Flip the cutting board over and the smooth side doubles as a cheeseboard.

Cuisinart Ice Cream and Gelato Maker

Return to your twice-a-day gelato habit like you’re still on vacation in Italy with Cuisinart’s Ice Cream and Gelato Maker. Two different paddles let you make either ice cream or gelato, and the only limitation on flavors is your imagination.

It’s easy to soak up the sun on Waikiki Beach for a week, sampling the area’s many restaurants and taking side trips to nearby Pearl Harbor or Diamond Head. But if you limit your Hawaiian vacation to just one area, you’re missing out. There are plenty of other things to do in Oahu, an island that spans 597 square miles of golden beaches, crashing waves, deep green forests, and laid-back surf towns.

To learn about Honolulu’s most popular attractions, see SmarterTravel’s Honolulu Travel Guide. But for the best things to do in Oahu outside the capital city, read on.

Have an Adventure

Sprawling across 4,000 verdant acres on Oahu’s Windward Coast, Kualoa Ranch offers just about every adventure you can imagine, from horseback riding and zip-lining to kayaking and ATV tours. This private nature reserve is also a popular Hollywood filming spot; movie tours lead visitors past familiar landmarks from films and TV shows such as Jurassic Park, 50 First Dates, and Lost.

You can also relax at Kualoa’s exclusive Secret Island Beach, where you can swim, kayak, play beach volleyball, or simply enjoy the views of Mokolii, a small island off the coast also known as “Chinaman’s Hat.”

Other adventurous things to do in Oahu include a hike or off-road expedition with North Shore EcoTours. The company operates on private conservation land, so there are no other tourists around.

Hit the Beach

AbElena/Shutterstock

Waikiki is the island’s most famous (and most crowded) beach, but there are plenty of other golden stretches of sand on Oahu where you can lay your towel. On the island’s Windward (eastern) Coast is Kailua Beach Park, which spans more than two miles and includes bathroom facilities, picnic tables, and multiple parking lots. Its calm waters are popular for swimming and kite surfing. Nearby is Lanikai Beach, which some travelers find even more beautiful, despite its lack of facilities and limited parking.

On the North Shore are beaches with towering wintertime waves for surfing, including Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach. Or head to the Leeward Coast on the west side of the island to catch the sunset from Keawaula Beach, also known as Yokohama; keep an eye out for dolphins or whales.

Help alleviate the environmental effects of your visit by participating in a beach cleanup. The company Travel2change offers a variety of activities like a yoga class or biking trip combined with a beach cleanup after your desired activity.

Soak Up Local History and Culture

performer at polynesian cultural center
Jose Gil/Shutterstock

Oahu may be best known for beaches and natural beauty, but it’s also home to a wealth of fascinating cultural attractions. Start with the Polynesian Cultural Center, where you can watch performances and visit villages representing the cultures of Hawaii, Tahiti, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, and Aotearoa. The popular attraction now offers immersive cultural experiences with locals like the Umu Making Experience. Each ticket entry (when purchased online) allows you to come back for free for three days, so you can experience other parts of the center.

Learn about the island’s history at Hawaii Plantation Village, which features restored buildings from the sugar plantation era of 1850 through 1950. Follow it up with a visit to Queen Emma Summer Palace, the former royal mountain retreat that’s now a museum housing furniture and regalia belonging to the 19th-century queen. Oahu is also home to spectacular museums like the Bishop Museum, Honolulu Museum of Art, the Hawaii State Art Museum, Iolani Palace, and the Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design.

And don’t discount Oahu’s modern art scene; street art is increasingly prominent in Honolulu and its surrounding neighborhoods. Check out Pow! Wow!’s interactive mural map of Oahu.

Taste the Island Flavors

From fresh seafood (poke, anyone?) to shave ice, Oahu offers plenty of delicious flavors to sample throughout your trip. A great place to start is at the many farmers’ markets that take place around the island, offering locally grown produce and artisan food items. You can visit the North Shore Country Market on Saturday mornings, the Windward Mall on Wednesdays and Sundays, or a number of others supported by the Hawaii Farm Bureau. If you’re in Oahu on a Saturday or Tuesday evening, check out the KCC Farmer’s Market for fresh and local food like fried mochi balls, seafood, coffee, and more.

Also be sure to explore the island’s more modern neighborhoods like Kaka’ako for juice bars, farm-to-table dining, and its own farmers’ market. And don’t leave the North Shore without trying shave ice: Visitors line up for the famed Matsumoto Shave Ice, and it’s worth it!

And, of course, you can’t visit Hawaii without going to a luau. This traditional Polynesian-style feast typically features pork roasted in an umu, or underground oven, as well as other Hawaiian dishes such as poi (mashed taro) and poke. Some of the most popular luau events on Oahu include the Alii Luau at the Polynesian Cultural Center and the Ka Moana Luau at Sea Life Park.

Take a Hike

hiker on mountaintop in oahu
Antler Photography/Shutterstock

Stretch your legs and enjoy some of Oahu’s best views by incorporating a hike or two into your vacation. One popular, not too strenuous option is the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail, located along the Kalanianaole Highway east of Honolulu. The two-mile paved trail overlooks the ocean; keep an eye out for whales in season.

Not far away is a significantly more challenging hike, the Koko Crater Railway Trail, where railroad ties now serve as steps for a steep uphill climb. The reward for all that effort? Sweeping views of Hanauma Bay, Diamond Head, and other landmarks in the eastern part of Oahu.

Other trails to consider include the Kuliouou Ridge Hike and the coastal trail at Kaena Point State Park.

Stroll Through Gorgeous Gardens

Hulabear/Shutterstock

Nature lovers will enjoy the lush foliage and vibrant flowers in botanical gardens across the island. A particular highlight is Waimea Valley, where a walking trail winds through a mix of tropical plants and cultural sites on the way to a waterfall visitors can swim in.

Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden is another serene place for a stroll, spanning some 400 acres of plants from various parts of Asia, Africa, Polynesia, and the Americas. Or you can wander among the native Hawaiian plants at Wahiawa Botanical Garden, located just down the road from Dole Plantation.

You can also stop by Byodo-In Temple, a scale replica of a Japanese temple surrounded by Japanese-style gardens.

Hit the Water

surfer north shore oahu
I. Noyan Yilmaz/Shutterstock

If you wanted to, you could spend the majority of your vacation enjoying the crashing waves and turquoise waters surrounding Oahu. Learn to hang 10 with a surfing lesson at Uncle Bryan’s Sunset Suratt Surf Academy or North Shore Surf Girls. Or, for something a little different, go “canoe surfing” with We Go! Island Canoe in Kailua. On the North Shore, Sea and Board Sports Hawaii offers a little of everything, from stand-up paddleboarding to glass-bottom kayaking.

And don’t neglect Oahu’s underwater world. Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, just a short drive from Honolulu, is one of the island’s most popular snorkeling spots, but you can also snorkel right off the beach at Shark’s Cove or Kuilima Cove on the North Shore.

The brave can book an open snorkeling session with famed marine biologist Ocean Ramsey and her company One Ocean Diving. The pelagic shark research snorkel teaches you about shark safety, biology, and conservation. And yes, you really get to swim in the open ocean with these fantastic animals.

Play a Round

The spectacular views at Oahu’s courses might ruin you for golf at home, but it’s a risk worth taking. Many of the most popular courses are on the grounds of resorts, including Ko Olina Golf Club, which features a Ted Robinson-designed course with plenty of water features, and Turtle Bay, which has two 18-hole courses on the scenic North Shore.

Non-resort courses to consider include the Ewa Beach Golf Club, a challenging course on the western side of the island, and the Royal Hawaiian Golf Club, offering lush foliage and mountain views on Oahu’s eastern side.

Learn About Agritourism

Many of Hawaii’s former sugar plantations are getting a second life. One example is Ko Hana Distillers, which is a rum distillery set on a former sugar plantation. You can even combine a distillery tour with a hike through the company Hawaii Forest & Trail. Or experience even more agritourism with the Farm to Forest Experience, which includes a tour of a working organic farm and a hike with amazing views.

A visit to Gunstock Ranch is another agritourism experience on Oahu. The ranch is home to a Hawaiian Legacy forest and offers tours to help plant trees as well as go horseback riding or tour the ranch.

Kahumana offers tours of its organic farm, which offers vocational training for locals struggling with homelessness or disability. You can also enjoy a delicious meal on site at the Kahumana Cafe.

Kahuku Farms offers tours as well as a cafe featuring ingredients grown on site. At the Dole Plantation, you can take a train tour, find your way through a garden maze, and sample ice cream made with the company’s famous pineapples.

Discover WWII History

Of course, no visit to Oahu is complete without a visit to the USS Arizona Memorial, but there are three other Pearl Harbor Historic Sites that are also worth visiting: the Battleship Missouri Memorial, USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park, and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum. Experiences range from guided tours to climbing aboard a real WWII-era submarine. The USS Missouri Memorial and Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum are located on Ford Island and accessible via shuttle buses. Here you can tour the historic battleship, see the battle-damaged airfield, and even walk inside hangars with a fleet of vintage airplanes. Tours and passes are available for all four sites.

When it comes to cheap eats in San Diego, the options center mostly around Mexican, seafood, pizza, and beer—and that’s just fine. Prices may be low, but the best cheap eats in San Diego earn high marks for authenticity, creativity, and freshness. These are some of the best food stands, diners, and shops in San Diego for inexpensive snacks and meals.

Top San Diego Cheap Eats

Here are nine places to get a delicious meal in the sunny SoCal city without breaking the bank.

Salud!

TripAdvisor

Salud! is a former food truck that got so popular it’s now a busy and fun restaurant in Barrio Logan, the city’s oldest Mexican-American neighborhood. When you’re looking for cheap eats in San Diego, head to Salud! for its daily taco specials and affordable micheladas. Locals line up for carne asada, carnitas, and street-style tacos, as well as beer, vegetarian options, and Mexican street corn. When you’re short on change but big on hunger, order the giant al pastor taco with shredded pork—this super-filling snack is also super affordable.

Las Cuatros Milpas

TripAdvisor

If you’re craving authentic Mexican food but can only afford to eat at the cheap restaurants in San Diego, Las Cuatro Milpas fits the bill. There’s always a long line of locals at this iconic Barrio Logan eatery—but these mouthwatering tamales and burritos are worth the wait. Plus, the line moves quickly, thanks to employees who are both efficient and extremely nice. Every tortilla served here is freshly made, and the rolled tacos are juicy and meaty.

Blind Lady Ale House

TripAdvisor

Blind Lady Ale House is a festive pub in Normal Heights. Its seasonal farm-to-table menu features creative full-sized pizzas, like the one with bacon and eggs. Quirky and down to earth with lots of craft beer—San Diego’s specialty—“BLAH” is a cool, casual, and family-friendly place to grab an affordable meal. For dessert, do a Batch root beer float.

The Crack Shack

TripAdvisor

For good cheap eats in San Diego, head over to one of the Crack Shack’s two locations—the main one in Little Italy, or the second spot in Encinitas. Both are egg-and-chicken-themed festive lunch spots serving chef Richard Blais’s inventive and affordable dishes like the senor croque sandwich, a fried chicken with pickled fresno chiles on brioche; and Mexican poutine, featuring schmaltz fries, pollo asado, and jalapeño cheese wiz. This is a casual indoor-outdoor eatery, and you can sit by the heater if you get chilly. There’s also a full bar.

Carnitas’ Snack Shack

TripAdvisor

Carnitas’ Snack Shack is a local favorite with an affordable and mostly meaty menu featuring items with pulled pork, pork belly, pork links, ham, and bacon. There are plenty of non-pork options as well, including beet terrine with goat cheese, crispy chicken, burgers, and a rib-eye steak sandwich.

Hodad’s

TripAdvisor

This throwback-style hamburger stand with a sense of humor (“Under 99 billion sold!”) is a great place to get cheap eats in San Diego. Hodad’s specializes in giant-but-affordable burgers, including the “Guido burger” inspired by Guy Fieri—it overflows with pastrami, ketchup, pickles, cheese, and more. Hodad’s has three busy but laid-back locations in San Diego: one downtown; one at Petco Park; and the original Ocean Beach spot, where it’s fun to sit and people watch. Besides the traditional beef burgers, there’s a good veggie burger, a giant serving of onion rings, and grilled cheese.

Phil’s BBQ

TripAdvisor

Down-home, family-owned, and community-oriented, Phil’s BBQ doles out huge portions from its four San Diego locations, including an always-busy spot in Point Loma. These heavenly baby back ribs come with onion rings, coleslaw, and fries. Phil’s also sells a variety of meaty sandwiches, a cheeseburger po’boy, and even a veggie burger.

Nomad Donuts

TripAdvisor

These are doughnuts like you’ve never seen—or tasted. The gourmet options at one-of-a-kind Nomad Donut change regularly, but you can expect specialty pastries featuring unique flavors from all over the world, like the dirty chai doughnut and the black currant harissa. The vegan options here are just as delicious and fluffy. Pro tip: Get here early for crullers.
