So, you’re heading off on that first adventure? You’re ready to hit the hostels and see the sights, tour the Colosseum, hike the Carpathians, and drive Route 66. Whatever bucket-list things you have on the menu, don’t even think about leaving without checking out our essential backpacking packing list.

We’ve got tips on the top backpacks for long-term budget travelers and oodles more suggestions on what to have in tow when you hit the road, from thermal fleeces to swimwear.

The Essentials

Backpack

Osprey Ariel 65 on white background

You’ll need a backpack to be a backpacker – the clue’s in the name. This will probably be the most important piece of kit you have since you’ll use it day in, day out. There’s no right or wrong backpack to go for. Different travelers like different things, though the most popular choice is one with 55-70 liters of space.

The Osprey Ariel 65 is a great choice for female travelers. It’s large enough to cover all but the longest trips, has easy front access, and has a handy rain outer for wetter destinations. The Osprey Aether 65 is the men’s version. It is roughly the same as the Ariel but has a slightly larger frame, plus a sleeping bag pouch below.

Small Backpack

Daylite Everyday Backpack on a white background

Most backpackers use the dual approach: One bag for clothes, another for electronics and important stuff. Doing that means you can keep your valuables close on trains and planes, and buses and not worry all that much about what happens to your main pack. It’s also a versatile option because you have a daypack for exploring towns and cities at hand whenever needed.

Again, it’s backpacker maestro Osprey that we recommend here. Their Daylite Everyday Backpack is great if you’re not bringing the laptop in tow; the Osprey Talon 22 Men’s Hiking Backpack is better if you are.

Water Bottle

YETI Rambler on white background with dishwasher safe and BPA free claim
Amazon

A backpacker’s water bottle should be two things: Hearty (for taking all those knocks on the cobbled piazzas of Italian hill towns and whatnot) and relatively large (for keeping you hydrated on long train journeys from A to B). The YETI Rambler ticks both those boxes, and we love the glug-friendly top. It’ll keep water cool for up to 12 hours, too.

Footwear

Walking Shoes

New Balance Women's Fresh Foam Roav V1 Sneakers on white background

Whether it’s from the train station to the underground beer halls in Prague or between the food courts of Bangkok’s Chinatown, you’ll be doing a lot of walking as a backpacker. Comfy day shoes are a must.

The New Balance Women’s Fresh Foam Roav V1 Sneakers are a solid choice for women, with their heavily buffered souls tailored to long walks. The classic Nike Men’s Air Max Shoes are uber-light and come with good arch support, and are a good choice for men.

Trail Runners

Salomon Women's Hypulse Trail Running Shoes on white background

For backpacking, trail runners are a better choice over hiking boots. These hybrid shoes strike a fantastic balance between size, weight, and versatility. Some of them weigh in at just 300g per pair, which is a whole load less than the 700-900g found on bigger boot models. On top of that, they’ll double up as hiking shoes, runners, and sports shoes.

The Salomon Women’s Hypulse Trail Running Shoes are a cracking choice for keeping it easy on the luggage allowance. They weigh just a quarter of a kilo and can be wedged into small gaps in the backpack. The Salomon Men’s X Ultra Pioneer is a more heavy-duty version that brings waterproof outers into the mix, making them better for travels in rain-prone destinations.

Flip Flops

Heading to the beach? Booked yourself accommodations with a pool? Flip-flops are a must for backpacking in hotter destinations. What’s more, they’re cheap. You can drop $30 on a pair of these that will be with you for years. I’ve had the Reef Men’s Fanning Flip-Flops for about three years, and they’re still going strong. The Reef Women’s Bliss Nights Flip-Flop is a better choice for the ladies, complete with narrow straps and vegan leather.

Travel Towel

Unfortunately, big, fluffy cotton towels are a home comfort. On the road, you want something small and packable. The newest microfiber tech on the REI Co-Op Deluxe edition is pretty incredible, which can absorb more than 6.5 times its weight in H2O. The medium one is enough for most people.

Packing Cubes

4 Packing cubes on a white background
Amazon

Packing cubes? In the essential column? You bet! These handy clothes organizers and compressors will be your best friend. Keeping your items organized and compressed will give you more room for everything you need on your backpacking journey.

Toiletries

Toiletries bag

Red North Face Travel Canister on white background
Amazon

Whether you’re staying in hostel dorms with shared bathrooms or private villas as a flashpacker, having a dedicated toiletries bag will make trips to the showers a whole load easier. The North Face Travel Canister is highly durable, has sturdy zips, and is the perfect size for your backpack.

Soap Holder

Blue and red travel soap holder on white background
Amazon

When you’re hopping from bargain hostels as a backpacker, you can’t rely too much on in-house cosmetics. The best solution is to get a travel soap holder and buy bars to carry with you. Not only does a bar of soap go further than a bottle of shower gel, but it’s an eco-friendly option to boot.

Clothing

T-Shirts/Tops

Black Icebreaker BodyfitZone Merino 150 Zone Long-Sleeve Crewe Thermal Top - Men's on white background
REI Co-op shop

Depending on the length of your trip, most folks pack 5-8 tops for an adventure. When traveling to South Asia or South America, you can go with fewer and rely on washing more often. In Europe and North America, launderettes can be a chore to find, you should go with an extra tee or two. For colder climates, couple a top with a good merino thermal underlayer. The Icebreaker BodyfitZone is our favorite for women and men.

Shorts/Pants

Female wearing beige shorts putting blue phone in the pocket
Amazon

The length of your bottoms will be determined by the season you’re backpacking in. Winter calls for longer, thicker wear on the legs, plus good underlayer thermals if it’s going to be snowy or sub-zero. For summer travels, wear 2-4 pairs of comfortable shorts, preferably in light, heat-dissipating cotton or linen.

Swim Shorts/Beach Wear

Man wearing Speedo Men's Swimsuit Jammer ProLT Solid
Amazon

Never forget your swimwear. No matter if you plan on touring the snow-capped Alps during the height of the ski season, there’s no telling when you’ll get the chance to take a dip. Serious swimmers who see themselves diving into the Scandinavian lakes for long-distance romps should go for something more performance-based, such as these Speedos for men and these swimsuits for women.

 Fleece

Patagonia Retro X on white background
REI Co-op Shop

A fleece ticks all sorts of boxes. It’s great for chilly evenings in the autumn and crisp mornings in the mountains. We’ve never owned a finer one than the classic Patagonia Retro X.

Waterproof Layer

Men's Torrentshell on white background
REI Co-op-Shop

Don’t think about hitting the road on that backpacking adventure without a waterproof layer. Yes, there’s a decent chance that you’ll carry it and never use it in certain parts of the world. But there’s no telling when the rains can hit. A 30-day storm over Europe caught me in the wet, and I pined for nothing more than a solid outer layer. The Torrentshell from Patagonia is a top choice for men, women, and the little ones.

Electronics

Convertors

EPICKA Universal Travel Adapter, International Power Plug Adapter with 3 USB-C and 2 USB-A Ports, All-in-One Worldwide Wall Charger for USA EU UK AUS (TA-105C, Black)
Amazon

Perhaps there will come a day when we can all agree on the best plug shape. But we haven’t yet, so the reality of traveling with convertors and adapters is still very much the status quo. A multi-country plug adapter can solve that, and this means you can carry less on trips that include more than one destination (as all the best backpacking jaunts do!).

Portable battery

A portable charger
Amazon

Imagine it: You’re looking for directions to the Taj Mahal, but your phone just died. You need to find the train schedules for departures to Amsterdam from Paris, but there’s zero battery in the bank. Not good. A portable charger has become as essential as smartphones in the modern travel era. You can’t do anything without juice!

SSD hard drive

SanDisk 2TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD
Amazon

There was a time when digital nomad backpackers would have to handle their portable hard drives like uncracked eggs. No longer. The advent of SSD tech means you don’t have to worry too much about dropping these critical pieces. The SanDisk 2TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD remains the leader of the pack thanks to its durability and dust/water resistance.

Once seen as the ultimate marker of a tourist, white sneakers have become ubiquitous all over the world. The right pair can transition from day to night, pair with dresses or jeans, and offer plenty of arch support and comfort while still looking stylish. These are the eight best white sneakers for travel.

SeaVees Balboa Court Shoe

Add a sporty spin to your travel wardrobe with SeaVees’ Balboa Court Shoe. This white cotton twill sneaker features an eye-catching grosgrain stripe detailing that sets the shoes apart from standard white pairs.

The Balboas look casual, but feature some serious comfort details, including a cushioned memory foam footbed with cooling airflow channels and a responsive “power grip” outsole.

Cariuma IBI Low Knit Sneaker

Show off your eco-friendly style with Cariuma’s IBI Low Knit Sneakers. Made from self-regenerating bamboo and recycled plastics, these comfortable shoes are kind to both your feet and the environment. The knit materials mold to your feet to create a custom fit.

Featuring a removable lightweight memory foam and cork insoles, these sneakers are super lightweight, making them easy to pack.

Rothy’s The Lace-Up

Rothy’s The Lace-Up

After your trip, you toss all your dirty clothes into the washing machine—so why not add your shoes in as well? You can if they’re Rothy’s Lace-Up sneakers, a clean white pair of shoes that will always remain pristine since they’re machine-washable. Simply remove the ultra-cushioned footbed and toss both the insole and the sneaker in the washing machine. They’ll emerge looking fresh out of the box white again in no time. Out of all my shoes, the stylish Lace-Ups are the ones that most consistently garner compliments (and “where did you get those” questions) during my travels.

Adidas Stan Smith

Zappos

Popular around the world, Adidas’ iconic Stan Smith sneakers go with any outfit and fit in anywhere. Opt for the all-white model or let your personal style shine through with pops of color on the heel and tongue. Either way, the excellent arch support and cushioning mean you’ll be packing (or wearing) these on every trip.

Thousand Fell Lace Up

Thousand Fell Lace Up
Thousand Fell

Hate having dingy sneakers? Get irrationally mad when someone steps on your white shoes? Thousand Fells Lace Up sneakers might be for you. These sneakers are stain proof, odor-resistant, and feature a water-resistant coating so liquids and dirt slide right off. When you’re ready for a new pair, send them back to Thousand Fell (using a free label) where they will be refurbished and given to someone in need or recycled—and you’ll get a credit towards a new pair.

Keds Champion Original Lace Leather

Keds Champion Original Lace Leather
Zappos

Keds are a classic for a reason, and the Champion Originals Leather is the brand’s most timeless style. Made out of 100 percent leather, with no embellishments or excessive design, these are the shoes for people who just want a simple white sneaker.

Superga COTU Sneaker

Superga 2750 COTU Classic Sneaker in white

Superga’s low-profile and lightweight classic sneakers are easy-to-pack (and easy to pair with anything in your travel wardrobe). The cotton unlined canvas upper is great for summer. A cushioned footbed, sturdy outsole, and soft lining make these shoes much more comfortable than they appear.

Taos Plim Soul Sneaker

Need a pair of shoes you can wear for an entire trip (without becoming offensively odorous)? Taos’ Plim Soul Sneakers are lined with a breathable canvas that’s been treated with a special odor-shield to keep your shoes stench-free. A trademarked Curves and Pods footbed has been designed to provide incredible arch and metatarsal support so you can wear these in comfort for many miles.

Crisp sheets, cloud-like duvets, and someone else making the bed for you—a hotel bed always feels way more luxurious than our simple one at home. Fortunately, we can help you recreate the feeling of a five-star hotel bed in your own bedroom (at least, the linen aspect—there’s no bed-making robot that we know of out there… yet).

Cozy Earth Bamboo Sheet Set

Cozy Earth

You might not sleep in a mansion like Oprah, but you can recreate her bedding situation with Cozy Earth’s Bamboo Sheet Sets. Named one of Oprah’s favorite things, these luxurious sheets are made from 100 percent premium bamboo viscose. The soft fabric not only feels good, but also helps regulate temperature.

Cozy Earth’s sheets will get softer with every wash—and they are deliberately oversized so you never have to deal with the annoyance of a too-small fitted sheet popping off the mattress again.

Fishers Finery Pure Mulberry Silk Pillowcase

Wake up looking refreshed with Fishers Finery Pure Mulberry Silk Pillowcase. Made from 100 percent pure silk, these smooth pillowcases will prevent wrinkles and protect your hair from damage (and bedhead). The silk fabric also helps regulate temperature, keeping you cool at night.

Stuffed with a down-alternative filling that contours to your head and neck, and topped with a cooling cover, the Nolah AirFiber Pillow will rival the pillows at luxury hotels. Designed to support all sleeping positions, this pillow will be comfortable for side or back sleepers.

Outfitted with the brand’s trademarked True Temp technology, these sheets will work all night long to adjust to a comfortable, cool, temperature for sleeping. The fitted sheet has an extra genius feature: hidden labels that tell you which corner of the bed they go on, eliminating the frustrating struggle of getting it properly on the mattress.

Casper Down Alternative Duvet

Casper Down Alternative Duvet

Somehow, hotel beds never seem too hot, even when you’re snuggled under lots of layers. Recreate the feeling at home with Casper’s Down Alternative Lightweight Duvet. This fluffy duvet is made with a TENCEL Lyocell fiber shell to keep you cozy (but not sweaty). The inside is made from an airy but substantial 100 percent recycled polyester that’s better for the planet (and allergies) compared to down.

Italic

Want luxury sheets at a fraction of the price? Check out Italic’s affordable selection of hotel-quality bedding. Italic uses the same manufacturer as Frette, Ritz Carlton, and the Four Seasons but is able to sell their bedding for significantly less by utilizing a membership-based model. Italic’s sheet sets are available in every type of material you can imagine—linen, jersey cotton, percale and more.

Brooklinen

 Brooklinen’s Heathered Cashmere sheets

Want to wrap yourself up in your favorite cozy cashmere sweater to sleep? Brooklinen’s Heathered Cashmere sheets are the next best thing. This lightweight set is soft yet breathable so you won’t overheat. Made from a cotton/cashmere blend, these luxurious sheets can still be machine washed.

A vacation to one of the many Disney parks around the world is a dream for millions of people. From thrilling rides to sparkling fireworks shows, the Disney experience is unmatched in terms of fun and memory-making.

Packing for the best Disney trip, however, might feel a little overwhelming, leaving you not knowing where to begin. But never fear, we’re here to help you make magic with this thorough Disney packing guide. We’ve found plenty of travel necessities to help you keep packing low on stress so your trip can be high on fun.

The Best Luggage for Disney

Samsonite Omni PC Hardside Expandable Luggage with Spinner Wheels, Checked-Medium 24-Inch, Caribbean Blue
Amazon

The Disney parks have a lot to offer—the variety of things you can do at any of them is nearly endless. While it’s impossible to prepare for every eventuality, by packing smartly you’ll increase your odds of being ready for just about anything.

A good bag is crucial to start with. Travelers will love the versatility of the eBags Mother Lode Large Rolling Duffel, with its spacious capacity and many convenient pockets. Those who prefer hard-shell luggage will appreciate the smooth wheeling action and durable polycarbonate body of the Samsonite Omni

If you’re traveling with small children, the Trunki Ride-On Suitcase can help you keep kids moving along without tiring them out with too much walking. Alternatively, you can attach a Lugabug Travel Seat For Kids to your hard-shell suitcase, if you’d like to have a little more control over their movements.

No matter what bag you choose, you’re going to want help to keep your belongings organized. The well-rated OlarHike 10 Piece Packing Cube Set will keep your clothing neatly contained, while the BeeGreen 6 Piece Shoe Bag Set protects your suitcase contents from your shoes. You’ll almost certainly want a wet bag for damp swimsuits and towels—this Little & Lourdes 2 Piece Laundry Bag Set is ideal, since it’s waterproof, odor-locking, and easily attaches to a backpack or diaper bag for carrying.

Before you go, don’t forget to attach a colorful tag with your contact info to each of your bags, like this Mifflin USA Luggage Tag that comes in a handy multipack.

The Best Day Bags for Disney

Pick a bag that can double as a personal item on the plane and also function as your day bag at Disney, carrying snacks, drinks, sunscreen, and various other necessities.

Fjällräven Kånken Classic in pink
Fjallraven

The lightweight, iconic Fjällräven Kånken Classic works well for Disney since it features a deep main pocket and water-resistant body (in case of sudden rain). The backpack is designed to help you keep your posture good through the longest days, and it even comes in a mini-size, so kids can have one too.

If you’re more of a belt bag lover, the Everest Extra Large Fanny Pack has a surprisingly large capacity and pockets galore. Fun printed options for kids include the Choco Mocha Kids Fanny Pack In Outer Space and the Choco Mocha Kids Fanny Pack In Unicorn.

Of course, you should always have a folding tote on hand for any little extras you pick up during your Disney day. The ChicoBag Vita Reusable Tote folds up so small, it takes up almost no space, and it has a carabiner attachment so that you can hang it from just about anything.

The Best Clothing to Pack for Disney

Whether you’ll be at a park with water features or you just want to splash around in your hotel pool, you need a swimsuit, and Old Navy has a great variety. For parents, suits like this attractive Square-Ring Halter One-Piece or these fun Flex Board Shorts are good-looking and practical. Kids will like this cute Lattice-Back One-Piece, or these cool Dolphin-Hem Board Shorts.

For casual park exploration, consider picking up some of these simple and comfortable t-shirts and flat-front chino shorts for men and these high-rise linen shorts with a relaxed fit v-neck tee for women.

Children love anything from fun dressy clothing to casual and comfy options when they go to Disney. For the fancier kids, you can go simple yet cute from H&M with this sleeveless tiered sundress that’s perfect for twirling in, or full princess in this Little Mermaid dress with tulle skirt. Littles who prefer a more casual look can have fun with official Disney shirts like this Turn to the Dark Side top or a vintage-look Mickey ringer tee, paired with cotton four-pocket shorts from Benetton.

The Best Shoes for Disney

Variety of women's fashion comfortable shoes of all seasons on a light background, top view
okkijan2010 | Adobe Stock

If you’re a really enthusiastic Disney fan, you’ll probably be at the parks from open to close. But even if you’re not quite that intense, you’re still likely to spend a lot of time at the park and on your feet. The shoes you choose will be a critical factor in how much fun you have during your park time, and how much energy you have left at the end of the day.

It’s tempting to wear sandals or flip-flops at Disney, but if you really want to be kind to your feet, you’ll go with a good sneaker to keep them protected and supported for hours of park walking. HOKA’s supportive Clifton 9 range comes in women’s, men’s, and kid’s models, allowing the whole family to enjoy their Disney adventure comfortably.

Good sneakers need good socks, and Hanes is a great brand for socks that keep your feet comfortable and dry. Some excellent options for families include Hanes Girls’ Cool Comfort Ankle Socks, Hanes Women’s Lightweight Breathable No Show Socks, Hanes Ultimate Men’s Socks and Hanes Boys Performance Ankle Socks.

Don’t forget to pack a pair of comfortable slip-ons for the hotel (and hotel pool) at the end of the day, like the Alegria Violette slides for Moms, the Teva Langdon for Dads, and the Children’s Place Unisex Buckle Slides for the kids.

What Toiletries to Pack for Disney

assorted toiletries
Okea | Adobe Stock

When arranging a trip for a family, the toiletries list can get long—everyone has different preferences and needs.

Start with this BagSmart Large Capacity Travel Toiletry Organizer, so that you can keep everyone’s cosmetics, sprays, lotions and soaps in one handy place. There are plenty of pockets for just about any toiletry you can think of, and a hanging hook so that you can keep your hotel bathroom counter space open.

Before you head to the parks, make sure everyone is protected from the sun. For adults, Banana Boat Light As Air Sunscreen Spray SPF 50 on the body and Neutrogena Sport Face Oil-Free Lotion Sunscreen SPF 70 on the face will keep your sunburn risk low. Then tackle the kids with Neutrogena Beach Defense Kids Sunscreen Spray SPF 70.

While you go about your day, keep some Purell Advanced Hand Sanitizer With Aloe available to keep sticky little hands clean, and make sure you have some Band-Aid Flexible Fabric Bandages to put on any cuts and scrapes. Blisters can happen, so a pack of Compeed Advanced Blister Care Bandages can be useful as well, and they come in a variety of shades and sizes.

If you’re combining a trip to Disney with one to the beach, Johnson’s Baby Powder is great for removing sand after your fun in the waves. And don’t forget OFF Insect Repellant for Kids and OFF Family Care Insect Repellant to help keep mosquitos at bay.

A day of fun in the sunshine and water can leave you feeling sticky and sweaty once all is said and done. Once you get back to your hotel room, wash away the grime of the day with a moisturizing body wash and don’t forget to pack baby shampoo for tear-free clean-up. Aquaphor Healing Ointment can be good to have on hand for any skin irritations.

What Electronics to Pack for Disney

BAGSMART Electronics Organizer Travel Case, Small Travel Cable Organizer Bag for Travel Essentials, Travel Tech Organizer as Travel Accessories, Cord Organizer for Phone, Power Bank SD Card, Black
Amazon

Families that travel together more than likely don’t want to listen to everyone’s music together, which makes a few pairs of JBL Tune 760NC Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones or JBL Tune 230NC True Wireless Noise Cancelling In-Ear Earbuds essential for sweet traveling harmony.

Use short cables like this USB-A to Lightning or a USB-A to USB-C for fuss-free on-the-go charging with a high-capacity Anker Portable Charger, and make sure your devices are protected with screen protectors.

If you’re bringing a digital camera along, don’t forget to pack an extra SanDisk 128 GB SD Card, to ensure you can capture all the magical Mouse House memories you want.

Lastly, don’t forget a BagSmart Electronics Organizer Case to keep it all in.

Essentials to Pack for Disney

MagicBand
Shop Disney

It’s the little things that keep you comfortable and happy during a long day at Disney. Here are a few essentials you shouldn’t leave behind.

Disney parks have water bottle stations everywhere, making it easy to stay hydrated if you have a refillable water bottle, like the Simple Modern Insulated Water Flask (also available in a kid’s version).. Simple Modern also offers a carrier sling in two sizes, so you don’t have to worry about how you’ll tote your bottle around.

A good way to stay cool is to have a rechargeable neck fan along with a four-pack of TowelTouch cooling towels in your park bag. And it’s always smart to keep one or two Totes Micro-Mini Umbrellas on hand in case of surprise rain, too.

It’s not a Disney trip if you’re not journaling your hidden Mickey sightings or getting autographs, so make sure you pack this Letterfolk Magical Day Passport Journal and a fun Mickey-themed autograph book and pen set.

Keep your vision safe in the sun with sunglasses—these Knockaround Fast Lanes are a great polarized option, or if you prefer a wraparound style, Suncloud’s Zephyrs might be more your thing. For kids, Knockaround’s Premiums will be a perfect fit (and even come in a fun shark-themed style). Don’t forget to add on a hat as well (because sunscreen alone shouldn’t be your only protection from the heat and UV rays) like this basic bucket hat, cute straw hat, or a fun kids’ Boonie Hat.

And of course, MagicBands help enhance your Disney experience—they can act as a roomkey (in Disney resorts), park pass, and food/souvenir purchase mechanism all in one. If you like planning ahead, you can grab one online at the official Disney store and get yourself set up ahead of time, so you can start using it as soon as you arrive.

Make sure you have everything you need next time you hit the road.

Basic Gear

From babies to adults, the gear you need varies. Here is what you need no matter where you are in life.

For All Families

Rain Gear

As much as you hope it doesn’t rain on your vacation, you do need to be prepared for those times that it does. Make sure you have umbrellas and raincoats or ponchos packed for those occasions. Waterproof shoes, rain boots, and galoshes should also be considered, especially if the extended forecast is calling for more than one rainy day.

Cooler

While you can always stop at a grocery store, it can be a pain to find the time or figure out where the nearest one is to where you are staying. To avoid having to go shopping, pack a cooler so your perishable items will stay cold. Be sure to have plenty of ice packs on hand.

Bike Rack/Bikes

If you are an active family, or you are going somewhere with a lot of bike trails, you’ll want to bring your bikes, so a bike rack will be key. We love the Camber Bike Rack from Thule, it can hold up to four bikes, and easily bends down for easy access to your trunk/hatch back.

Roof Cargo Carrier

Not all cargo space is created equal, and unless you have a van or a large SUV, chances are you will need some extra space when you pack for vacation. A roof cargo carrier will give you that extra space you need. Make sure your car has the correct roof rack rails to hitch a carrier properly and securely. We love the Thule Motion XT Rooftop Cargo Carrier, there is plenty of space for extra gear, and it is durable through the elements.

Folding Blanket

This might be the one travel item you never knew you needed until you have one. Folding picnic blankets can easily be stored in the back of your car to be used no matter what occasion arises- a trip to the beach, a stop at the park- you name it, you’ll be prepared. Ones like this fold up into themselves and have an integrated handle for easy carrying.

Food and Drink

Water Bottles

Rather than rely on bottled water (and to help the environment), you should invest in water bottles for the whole family. Ones with an integrated straw or a flip top of some sort are best for car rides, so you don’t have to worry about water spilling out. This one from Yeti will keep your water cold and spill-free!

Snacks

One of the most important parts of a road trip is the snacks. While many families may have their traditional snacks for the road (ours was always Cheez-Its), you don’t want to forget some basic staples. Nuts, fruit, and protein bars are great to have on the road to curb hunger between stops.

Baggies

Baggies are imperative to a road trip- it is much cheaper to buy a bigger bag of something and divvy it up for everyone in the car using sandwich bags. Reusable ones like these from Smelly Proof are perfect because you can rinse them out and use them again, no need to pack an entire box of baggies!

Entertainment/Tech Gear

Tablets

I often wonder how my parents did road trips with five kids and no tablets when I was a kid. When my son was two and a half, we made the mistake of not allowing the tablet. In a desperate measure, I gave it to him with a few hours left of our twelve-hour trip. It was a miracle. We have not made that mistake again, and always bring it on any road trips we take. We love the Amazon Kindle for Kids. If it breaks, they will replace it for 2 years, plus it has time limits you can set, as well as total control of the content.

Streaming Devices

While most hotels and rentals have smart tv’s you can use to log into your streaming accounts, they may not have every app you are looking for, and you may not want to log into a shared device. Avoid this by bringing along your Apple TV, Amazon Fire Stick, Roku, or whatever your streaming device of choice is.

Car Surprises

Because tablets didn’t exist when I was a kid, my mom had a different solution: a bag full of “surprises” she would dole out at designated spots along the way (breakfast, lunch, etc..) It wasn’t anything major- things like woolly willy, mad libs, card games, and books. It gave us something to do between each stop and gave a little excitement to being in the car for an entire day.

Chargers

Don’t forget all of the chargers you will need while away, including charges for: phones, watches, tablets, and laptops. It’s always smart to bring a portable charger as well for when you are out for the day.

For Families with Babies

Strollers

Wagon Stroller

A wagon stroller is going to be one of the best purchases you make for your trip (and beyond). Not only will your sitting babies be able to sit in it, but your toddlers will be able to as well. We love the Adventure Bundle From Gladly Family. It has an insanely smooth ride, heavy-duty wheels, a cooler bag, cup holders, double canopies and more.

Umbrella Stroller

Umbrella strollers are super convenient to keep in your car once you’ve arrived at your destination. They are lightweight, and, as the name suggests, fold up easily like an umbrella. Perfect for toddlers and sitting babies. We love the Summer 3D umbrella stroller for a more robust feel, and for a lighter weight, more basic one, we love this one by Cosco

Rain Cover for Stroller

You don’t want the threat of rain to ruin your plans for the day, so always be prepared with a rain cover. It will easily store underneath your stroller, or in one of its pockets. Quickly open it up and drape it over your stroller to keep your baby dry.

Mosquito Net for Stroller

You should avoid using bug spray on babies, so a net like this will protect them from mosquitoes and other pesky bugs.

Sleep

Pack ‘N Play

Pack n’ plays are synonymous with traveling with a baby. They are convenient and can be put up in no time once you put it up once or twice. You can always go with the classic Pack ‘N Play or the Bugaboo Stardust Playard

Monitor

If you have a Wi-Fi baby monitor at home, you may want to invest in a closed-circuit one for vacation. The Hello Baby monitor has a long range, so you can easily sit on your deck and enjoy the evening after the baby is in bed.

Noise Machine

A noise machine has almost become standard in every baby’s nursery, and when you are on the road it is even more important to have one to help your baby sleep. Outside noises, noisy neighbors, or simply unfamiliar noises can cause sleep issues when on the road. A noise machine will help filter out those noises. Try the Color Noise Sound Machine, which is compact, and also has a built-in night light with ten colors to choose from, as well as twenty-five sounds to choose from.

Waterproof Mattress Pad

One thing you don’t want to have to do while on the road is let the Airbnb owner or hotel management know that your child wet the bed. Bring along as many waterproof mattress pads as you have kids in diapers/toddlers, and don’t take any chances. The SureGuard mattress protector will keep the mattress dry no matter what may happen.

Bottles/Bottle Warmer

You don’t want to forget your baby’s bottles. Sure, these days you can order almost anything online or find a store along the way, but stay on top of things and make sure you pack your bottles. A portable bottle warmer is key when you are on the road as well. This portable bottle warmer will become your best friend when you are out and about. Charge it before you leave, and it will heat the bottle up in just three minutes. Don’t forget your formula and portable dispenser. These microwavable bottle sterilizers will be your best friend when on the road. No need to boil or lug around a big sterilizer system. Just pop them in the bag with a little water, put them in the microwave, and you are good to go!

Wearable Breast Pump and Accessories

If you are breastfeeding, the best thing you can do for yourself while traveling is invest in a wearable breast pump. They make pumping in the car more manageable than a regular breast pump, not to mention when you are out and about while vacationing. You can pop them on at the beach, amusement park, museum- wherever the day takes you- without having to stop everything to pump or breastfeed. We love these from Momcozy. They are as efficient as a regular pump, and don’t leak.

If you don’t want to get wearable pumps, get a power inverter for easy plugging in while on the road so you don’t have to worry about keeping your pump charged or having batteries on hand. And, of course, don’t forget your breast pump! Don’t forget bags to store your breast milk, and a cooler to keep it cool while on the road. We love the on-the-go thermos/cooler system from Ceres Chill. It easily keeps your breastmilk cold while not at home in a compact, simple way- without needing a cooler. Take this with you during the day, and transfer the milk into bags when you get back to your hotel or rental.

Portable high chair/booster seat

Having a spot to contain your baby or toddler is key while out and about. While boosters that attach to seats like these are popular, an even better option is a camp chair high chair like this one from Ciao Baby. The youngest members of your family will be able to sit and enjoy meals at the same level as you, and they fold up like regular camp chairs, so won’t take up too much space.

Play Time

If your baby loves their swing or bouncy chair, getting a collapsable rocker like this one for your family vacation is probably for the best. You can lay it flat and pack things on top of it.  A fold-up play mat is also key for families with infants, as you don’t want to lose out on all of that tummy time while you are away! You also don’t want to forget any of your baby’s favorite rattles, books, teething toys, or stuffies

Baby Basics

Babies tend to need a lot of gear while on the road. And while some things may seem obvious, there are everyday basics you probably already have in your diaper bag, but you really don’t want to forget:

Bibs
Wipes
Burpy Cloths
Diapers
Overnight Diapers
Butt Cream
Tylenol
Changing Pad
Blankets
Swim Diaper
Clothes

Clothes

While it may seem obvious that you need to pack clothes, sometimes you may be on vacation and kicking yourself that you forgot that one thing that you desperately need. While you never want to overpack (trust me, you don’t need that pair of jeans you have never worn), you do want to make sure you are prepared. While you likely won’t forget the essentials like underwear, pants, and shirts, the less obvious things like sweatshirts, cover-ups, bathing suits, and hats may get lost in the shuffle.

For the actual trip in the car, these leggings from lululemon paired with a loose fitting top like this one, shorts and a t-shirt for men, for kids we love the gym short paired with the Classic Tee from Primary. If you have a baby, opt for a onesie that has a zipper for those panicked times you have to pull over on the side of the road for a quick diaper change- you won’t want to have to deal with snaps!

Toiletries

While most toiletries you will remember as you stand in your bathroom packing your toiletry bag, there are others that you may keep somewhere else and you don’t want to forget, like sunscreen, insect repellent and medications. The good news about a road trip is that you aren’t as restricted when it comes to luggage, so you can bring full-sized items, and not worry about having to get travel sized ones

While you always want to be comfortable during your travels, part of staying safe in an unfamiliar place is dressing to blend inor, at least, not dressing to stand out. Keep in mind local customs and attitudes, as well as religious beliefs, when choosing what to wear while traveling, especially abroad. Whether it’s because you’ll stick out like a sore thumb overseas or you’ll be uncomfortable on a plane, here are 10 things you should avoid wearing while traveling, as well as ideas for what to wear instead.

Revealing Clothing

SFIO CRACHO/Shutterstock

Research your destination, opt for modest clothing in more conservative destinations, and cover up appropriately when you’re visiting religious sites. Tank tops and shorts—as well as shirts with distasteful logos or words—can be considered offensive in many Middle Eastern and Asian countries, and many churches in Europe have strict dress codes.

In some parts of the world, women should avoid miniskirts, tank tops, bra tops, and sometimes even shorts and capri pants. Revealing dresses and cleavage-bearing necklines may also make you stand out in conservative countries. Men should avoid shorts and sleeveless tops in many Middle Eastern countries, or when entering a church or other holy place.

What to wear: Pants and long skirts are a safe bet, and women may want to carry a shawl in their bag or purse just in case. As a general rule, travelers should cover their shoulders and knees when entering any church or holy site to avoid unwanted stares or being denied entry. It’s also wise to keep your feet and ankles covered. When in doubt, stick to long sleeves, and men, keep that chest hair concealed.

Flashy Jewelry

Never wear expensive, flashy jewelry when traveling abroad, unless you want your diamond ring, pearls, or pricey watch to be tagged for someone else’s collection. You may also be more likely to misplace your cherished jewelry while traveling. Instead, leave the valuables at home.

What to wear: If you must have a little adornment, bring one or two costume pieces that will go with your outfits. And if you choose to wear your engagement ring, turn the stone to the inside of your hand on public transportation and in large crowds.

Impractical Shoes

Luna Vandoorne/Shutterstock

“Impractical” covers a wide range of bad footwear choices, including flip-flops (unless you’re at the beach), high heels (unless you’re attending a formal event), and brand-new shoes (because wearing shoes that haven’t been broken in is just asking for blisters). While sneakers are supportive, it’s wise to stay away from all-white trainers that will just get dirty—and mark you as an American tourist.

What to wear: Consider the climate and the activities you’ll be doing on your trip. Generally speaking, the key is to pick comfortable, supportive shoes in neutral or darker colors—and don’t forget appropriate socks. If you’re traveling anywhere but a beach, stick with closed-toe shoes, which can help prevent insect bites or cuts on your toes from gravelly surfaces.

The Wrong Colors

Ann Haritonenko/Shutterstock

We’re all for expressing yourself, but when you travel, bright colors aren’t always the way to do it. You’ll stick out more in many destinations, and if you spill your gelato, it’s going to be harder to hide that stain. You want to blend in, not draw unwanted attention to yourself (and nothing does the latter better than a neon green tank top).

Avoiding certain colors can even keep you safe. In sub-Saharan Africa, where tsetse flies transmit a potentially fatal disease known as trypanosomiasis, the CDC recommends wearing “neutral colors that blend with the background environment” because the flies are attracted to bright or very dark colors.

What to wear: Unless loud colors or bold patterns are the norm in your destination, consider sticking with conservative hues like navy, blue, tan, and gray—and you’ll rarely go wrong with classic black.

The Wrong Pants

atdigit/Shutterstock

Jeans are always a reliable choice, right? Not necessarily. If you’re traveling to a warm and/or rainy climate, consider alternatives; jeans don’t breathe well and take a long time to dry, making them impractical for many itineraries involving the outdoors. Skinny jeans can be uncomfortably tight on long flights or train rides, while baggy or ripped jeans may look disrespectful if you wear them into churches, mosques, or other holy sites.

Meanwhile, you’ll probably look similarly out of place by wearing hiking pants or sweatpants on the streets of large cities.

What to wear: Research your destination’s weather and cultural norms before you start packing to make sure your choices will help you fit in and stay comfortable.

Religious Imagery, Curse Words, or National Flags

Simia Attentive/Shutterstock

Avoid clothing with sporting, religious, or military symbols, swear words, national flags, and any words or symbols written in a language you cannot translate. There’s no need to unintentionally spark an emotional debate while on vacation or to risk being kicked off a plane for wearing something the airline doesn’t approve of.

Be wary of hand gestures, both making them and wearing clothing depicting them, because these can have different meanings depending on where you are. (In Bangladesh and other parts of the world, for example, the “thumbs up” gesture is considered obscene.) Since you may never know what certain images suggest in another country, avoid them to keep from offending anyone.

What to wear: When in doubt, opt for clothing with solid colors or simple patterns, available from brands such as Ann Taylor, Everlane, Banana Republic, and Uniqlo.

Excessive Technology

sandro_laz/Shutterstock

Please, we beg of you, don’t be that tourist. While we all want the perfect vacation Instagram, we don’t want to be hit in the head by your selfie stick. The same goes for tablet-sized cameras and other large tech accessories. Stick to snapping pics with your phone or an actual camera to avoid injury and inconvenience to those around you.

And unless you’re a serious photographer, reconsider walking around a busy city with a huge camera hanging around your neck. Not only will you stand out, but you may also be targeted by thieves.

What to wear: Between uses, always keep your phone or camera stored safely in a zipped purse, camera bag, or pocket.

Backpacks and Large Purses

tourists with backpack and large purse in crowd.
Nataly Reinch/Shutterstock

Backpacks and large purses tend to be impractical for urban sightseeing—do you really want to lug all that weight around? They’re also appealing targets for thieves, who can easily reach into an unzipped tote or sneak something out of a backpack while you’re wearing it on a busy subway train.

What to wear: Cross-body bags are one of the best options for travel, but any bag that fully zips will make you less of a target for thieves. Sling bags are another, gender-neutral option.

Uncomfortable Fabrics

Iryna Mishyna/Shutterstock

We’ve all been there. You packed a dress for a wedding, only to unpack and discover it’s a wrinkled mess. Or you thought jeans would be a good idea on the plane, and now they’re cutting off your circulation mid-flight. From discomfort to wrinkles and funky odors, the fabrics you choose can make or break your travel days. Avoid silks, nylon, leather, rubber, and, more generally, clothes made from a non-performance synthetic material.

What to Wear: Check the weather at your destination and keep in mind your activities. Some foolproof fabrics for packing and travel are moisture-wicking activewear, cotton, jersey, and clothes marketed as wrinkle-free.

An Oversized Jacket

woman in oversized coat in winter.
GaudiLab/Shutterstock

Unless you’re skiing or taking on another outdoor winter adventure, leave the oversized jacket at home. This will save you space, weight, and hassle when packing.

What to wear: Layering is your friend. When traveling to a cooler destination, pack a few longer sleeved shirts as a base, then layer sweaters and a looser, lightweight winter jacket. Luckily, many travel and outdoor recreation companies are coming up with lighter down jackets that can be compressed into a small pack, such as this option for men or this one for women.

If you want to travel light and still be clean, you should know how to do laundry on vacation. But no one wants to spend precious travel time at a laundromat or pay exorbitant fees for hotel laundry service. Here are some quick, easy, and cheap ways to wash your clothes while traveling.

Pack a Portable Wash Bag

Scrubba portable laundry washing bag (left) and Laundreez portable laundry washing bag (right)
Amazon

When you want your clothes to be washing machine clean, pack the Scrubba. This little, lightweight (five-ounce) bag is a more portable version of a washboard: It has flexible nodules built in to help scrub your items clean. Simply fill the bag with water and detergent, toss your clothes in, rub them to cleanse, rinse, and hang them (and the bag) to dry. The whole process takes just three minutes.

Similar to the Scrubba, the Laundreez is a dry bag for laundry that has a clip closure. To use, fill the bag with water and add a few drops of detergent along with the clothes you’re washing. This portable washer can also be used as a dry bag or cooler. Favorite features include the cap nozzle for easy rinsing, as well as the removable mesh bag interior for delicates.

Use a Ziplock Bag

Stuck without a Scrubba on hand? In a pinch, a ziplock bag will do the trick. Simply add some detergent to a gallon ziplock, work the soapy clothes to a lather, unzip, rinse, and hang to dry.

Use Dry Detergent

Don’t mess around with messy liquid detergents when traveling. We recommend Travelon Laundry Soap Sheets, which start as solids and dissolve in water. Unlike liquid detergents, these don’t need to follow the 3-1-1 liquids rule when flying, and you don’t have to worry about suitcase spills.

Do Laundry in the Shower

Wash yourself and your clothes at the same time by taking an item or two in with you while you shower. You can even substitute shampoo for laundry detergent in a pinch.

Bring a Travel Clothes Line

Travel clothesline and attached clothes pins alongside grey carrying case (left) and travel clothes line hung outside with pieces of fabric drying on it (right)
Amazon

You don’t want to spend all that time cleaning your clothes and then have to pack wet items when you leave in the morning, so you’ll need to be strategic about drying. Wash your clothes at night, and if possible, do it when you’re staying in a place for more than one night.

Pack a travel clothesline (this one has clothespins attached) and hang it near an open window, fan, or radiator in order to dry your clothing quickly.

Pack a Plain Stain Stick

In case of a laundry emergency, like a food or drink spill, pack a stain stick. These will instantly remove most stains before they have a chance to set and make any lingering spots easier to launder out, even if you have to wait to wash the item until you get home.

For Long-Term Travel: The Wonderwash

The Wonderwash portable washing machine in mint green and light pink
Amazon

I wouldn’t pack this in my suitcase, but if you’re on a long trip in a boat or RV, the Wonderwash could be a great washing machine alternative. This gadget weighs five pounds and is powered by a hand crank. Your clothes will emerge clean after just a few minutes of work.

There’s something about Europe that makes you want to step up your travel wardrobe game. A dress is the easiest way to do so—a good one can instantly create a one-piece outfit, it doesn’t take up much space in your suitcase, and it’s easy to transition from day to night.

Since no one wants to spend their European vacation stuck in their room steaming clothing, look for fabrics that resist wrinkles (and odors, so that you can get multiple wears out of one dress).

These are the best travel-friendly dresses to pack for Europe.

Carve Designs Lexi Dress

Female modeling red and pink stripped dress
Carve Designs

A mid-weight dress with long sleeves, like the Lexi Dress by Carve Designs, is perfect for sun protection or cooler nights. Made from 100 percent organic cotton, the Lexi Dress is breathable and comfortable no matter if you’re walking all day or sitting on a plane.

Details like a slight boat neck and small side slits add extra style to the dress, and the style comes in a variety of eye-catching colors that help set this dress apart.

Toad & Co Cue Wrap Short Sleeve Dress

Female modeling black dress front and back
Toad & Co

Wrap dresses are fashionable but a terrible idea on a windy day. Get all the style of a wrap dress (with the comfort of a low-maintenance t-shirt dress) with Toad & Co’s Cue Wrap Dress

The dress features a faux wrap design and a self-tie belt that gives you the option for a custom fit. Made from an organic cotton and Tencel Lyocell blend fabric, the Cue dress offers the perfect amount of stretch and structure.

Coolibar Tierra Tank Dress

Female modeling blue and white floral patterned dress front and back
Amazon

Summers in Europe can be extremely hot, so if you’re spending the day outside, make sure you’re protecting yourself from the sun. There’s no more stylish way to get your UPF protection than with Coolibar’s Tierra Tank Dress.

Made from a special soft and stretchy knit fabric, this dress blocks up to 98 percent of UVA/UVB rays.

Columbia Plus Size Freezer III Dress

Female modeling black dress from the front angled and from the back.
Zappos

Air conditioning may be hard to find in Europe, but you can still stay cool in Columbia’s Freezer III Dress. The dress utilizes Columbia’s trademarked Omni-Freeze technology, which helps lower skin surface temperature when it gets wet, keeping you from overheating when you start sweating.

It’s available in a wide range of sizes, including plus sizes up to 3X, so all travelers can wear this dress.

Carve Designs Lyla Dress

Female modeling a multi colored floral dress front and back
Carve Designs

Pack a versatile dress that will work on the beach or a bike ride, like Carve Design’s Lyla Dress. Made from recycled plastic bottles, this dress is quick-drying and resists wrinkles. A built-in shelf bra means there’s one less thing for you to have to pack.

The lightweight material is super stretchy and quick-drying, so this dress will still look good even after a day of exploration.

Toad & Co Sunkissed Maxi Dress

Female modeling black maxi dress front and back
Toad & Co

Toad & Co’s Eco Kohilo fabric is simply magical. Made from mostly recycled polyester, it’s easy on the environment—and easy to pack since it folds down small and is wrinkle-proof (no matter how tightly you rolled it up). Find it in the Sunkissed Maxi Dress, which is ultra-lightweight, yet offers plenty of coverage (plus UPF 40 sun protection).

Two on-seam hand pockets make this dress perfect for travel, giving you a discreet place to stash things like your phone or keys.

Zella Departure Travel Dress

Female modeling blue dress with cream bag across her chest and the blue dress not being worn
Nordstrom

Keep things simple with a classic little black dress that will look at home wherever you go. Zella’s version, the Departure Travel Dress, is designed for travel thanks to a fabric that resists wrinkles and keeps you looking polished.

This dress can be paired with sneakers during the day for a more casual look or with sandals for a fancy night out.
