Two things are hard to find in New York City: space and silence. A room at The James New York – Nomad provides both. Set in a beautiful Beaux Arts building that was designated as a New York City landmark in 2018, this luxury boutique provides an elegant escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Located in Manhattan’s trendy NoMad neighborhood and housing one of the city’s hottest cocktail lounges, guests at The James can be in the heart of the action in just seconds.

The Location

The James is located in the NoMad (North of Madison Square Park) neighborhood, an area that’s lively without being overly touristy. The property is within one block of multiple subway stations, and just over half a mile from Pennsylvania Station, making it easy to get around the city.

A number of charming restaurants, bars, and shops await just outside the hotel’s doorstep.

Amenities

The James offers a number of wellness-focused amenities, some of which guests can experience without even leaving their room. As part of the hotel’s Four Bodies wellness program, in-room smart televisions feature complimentary on-demand workout sessions that can be performed without any equipment (exercise bands are available upon request to up the intensity).

The James has partnered with SLT Tread, a local-favorite fitness studio that’s just around the corner from the hotel. The intense classes combine strengthening exercises on Megaformers with running intervals on Woodway treadmills.

Additional amenities include:

  • 24-hour fitness center
  • The Botanist and The Chemist toiletries
  • Complimentary WiFi
  • Custom robes and slippers
  • Free coffee, tea, and fresh fruit in the mornings
  • Nightly wine and bites happy hour

Four-legged guests aren’t left out of the amenities. The pet-friendly hotel can provide dog beds, food and water bowls, and all-natural baked treats. The James is the rare New York City hotel that doesn’t have any restrictions on dog sizes or breeds.

The Rooms

The James features 337 guest rooms, 28 suites, and 2 penthouses. All rooms are luxuriously appointed with pillow-top mattresses, Turkish cotton towels, dimmable lighting, and stylish design accents.

We stayed in a Corner King Deluxe, a surprisingly spacious (300 sq. ft.) room. Despite the prime location on 28th Street, the room was completely quiet at night. Combined with the comfortable beds topped with natural linens, it made for a great night’s sleep.

Dining

In a city with as many dining and drinking options as New York, it can be a challenge for a hotel to create something worth staying in for. However, The James manages to accomplish just that, with two hot on-property spots that draw in both locals and guests.

Scarpetta, the hotel’s main restaurant, is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Friday, dinner on Saturday and Sunday, and Sunday brunch. The elegant dining room serves gourmet Italian-inspired dishes that change frequently depending on what’s in season. Our personable Italian waiter steered us towards the dishes that reminded him of home—the market strawberries (served with basil granita and fresh creme), burrata with fresh heirloom tomatoes, and the seared tuna, all of which were impeccable.

Guests should make a reservation if they hope to visit Seville, the hotel’s speakeasy-style cocktail lounge. During our Thursday night stay, there was a line down the block to get in to this buzzy bar.

Price and How to Book

Room rates start at around $230 and can be booked on SmarterTravel Hotels

Tucked away on the shores of New Hampshire’s pristine Lake Winnipesaukee, Mill Falls at the Lake offers the quintessential New England vacation experience. With multiple dining and accommodation options, a bustling town square, and a prime waterfront location, Mill Falls at the Lake is a true destination resort for everything from family trips to romantic getaways.

Mill Falls at the Lake offers four distinct accommodation options: Church Landing, Bay Point, Chase House, and the Inn at Mill Falls.

We stayed at Church Landing, an Adirondack-style inn boasting lake views in an elegant setting.

The Location

Mill Falls at the Lake is set on the northwestern shores of Lake Winnipesaukee in Meredith, New Hampshire. The resort is within steps of charming downtown Meredith, as well as The Marketplace, Mill Falls’ lively outdoor mall featuring local restaurants and boutique shops.

Looking for some outdoor adventure? Mill Falls at the Lake is just 15 minutes from Gunstock Mountain, which offers skiing, hiking, ziplining, a mountain coaster, and more.

Amenities

With an on-site activity center, EKAL, guests at Mill Falls at the Lake will never be bored. EKAL (lake spelled backward) offers a variety of ways to get out on the water, including pontoon boat charters, stand-up paddle boards, kayaks, canoes, and even aqua cycles—unique boats you can peddle on the water the same way you’d peddle a bike on land.

Back onshore, guests can rent bikes, play lawn games, roast s’mores, go on a guided hike, or take a yoga class.

The Rooms

Chase House

The newly renovated Chase House puts guests just steps from Meredith’s town village. All rooms offer lake views and fireplaces, making this hotel popular for fall and winter vacations.

The Inn at Mill Falls

Housed in a restored nineteenth-century linen mill, the 54-room Inn at Mill Falls is the largest hotel in the group. Rooms are spacious, making them a good choice for families or groups.

Church Landing

For the ultimate Lake Winnipesaukee vacation, you can’t beat one of the rooms on the lower level of Church Landing. These luxuriously spacious guestrooms offer walk-out access to the lake, along with private covered patios from which to admire the view.

Dining

Several restaurants at Mill Falls at the Lake

Kids (and adults looking for some comfort food) will love the nostalgic summer camp-style offerings at Camp. In addition to old classics like clam chowder and nachos, there are upgraded options like lobster corn dogs or bacon-wrapped jalapenos.

Giuseppe’s Pizzeria & Ristorante

When you’re craving a good pizza, head to Giuseppe’s for the quintessential Italian restaurant experience, where gourmet pies and pasta are served atop red checkered tablecloths.

Lago

Book a table at Lago for the right time of night, and you’ll be rewarded with a stunning sunset view at this elegant waterfront restaurant—the spacious patio is the place to be on warm summer nights.

A good night’s sleep is the ultimate vacation luxury, but getting eight (or more) hours can be difficult in a new environment. Add in jet lag, uncomfortable hotel beds, and loud guests, and you might spend your whole trip dreaming about your bed back home—unless you stay at one of these hotels featuring unique sleep-focused amenities designed to lull you into an amazing night’s rest.

Dream Butlers, Tschuggen Grand Hotel

Guest room at the Tschuggen Grand Hotel
Tschuggen Grand Hotel

While you’re enjoying a relaxing footbath and massage at the Tschuggen Grand Hotel, your Dream Butler is hard at work preparing your room with a special turndown service that sets the mood for rest. The room’s temperature, humidity, and lighting will be dialed into the perfect settings for slumber, and a scented candle, pillow spray, and bedtime book will be laid out.

The hotel partnered with the Hofklinik, a leading sleep center in Lucerne, to create this sleep program, which includes an easily digestible meal and a selection of teas containing ingredients known to help with rest.

The Art + Science of Sleep, Equinox Hotel

Guest room at the Equinox hotel in New York City
SmarterTravel Hotels

New York may be the city that never sleeps, but guests at the Equinox Hotel won’t have that problem. Rooms are specifically engineered to promote slumber and are equipped with a “quiet, dark, cool” setting you can activate at the touch of a button for perfect sleeping conditions.

Even the beds are optimized for sleep, and if you fall in love with them, the hotel’s proprietary sleep system, from the mattress to the duvet, can be purchased to take home.

Truly tired travelers should book the Art + Science of Sleep program, a two-night stay that includes time on a spa wave table that claims to provide the equivalent of three hours of sleep in 30 minutes, two cryotherapy treatments, hot and cold pool plunges, food and beverages that naturally increase melatonin production, and in-room sleep-enhancing rituals.

Langham Sleep Matters By Chuan, Langham Hotels

Langham Hospitality Group

“Sleep plays a vital role in a memorable travel experience for our guests. Helping our guests enjoy a good night’s sleep allows them to experience a more enjoyable vacation or higher productivity on a business trip,” says Michele Grosso, Managing Director at The Langham, Boston. That’s why all Langham hotels worldwide offer the Sleep Matters program, a program Grosso says is “designed to enhance the wellness of our guests while also giving them tools they can take home and continue to practice long after their stay.”

Created in partnership with Chuan spas, guests will receive sleep-inducing amenities, including tips on enhancing sleep quality, breathing exercises, and a calming pre-bed playlist.

Guests can also choose their perfect pillow from the Langham’s pillow menu—a soothing lavender-scented one is the most popular.

Rest & Recovery Suite, Hotel Figueroa

Guest room at Hotel Figueroa
SmarterTravel Hotels

For guests who book the Rest & Recovery Suite at Hotel Figueroa, the experience starts before arrival when you can pre-order a customized pillow from Pluto Pillow designed to suit your sleeping preferences.

Once you arrive, you’ll pop in the complimentary Bollsen earplugs and drift off to sleep in an Eight Sleep mattress, a smart mattress that automatically adjusts the temperature on both sides of the bed (so you and your partner won’t spend your trip fighting over the thermostat.)

Greet the day gradually, as the suite’s Loftie Lamp wakes you up naturally with a “personal sunrise” instead of a blaring alarm.

Sleep Program, Six Senses Ibiza

SmarterTravel Hotels

Want to be well-rested even when you’re not on vacation? Guests who are serious about sleep can sign up for the Sleep Program at Six Senses Ibiza, designed to help establish a sustainable sleep routine that can be practiced at home.

Choose from a three-, five-, or seven-night program, depending on how much time (and budget) you have to devote to sleep. Participants will wear a biometric tracker and have their sleep data analyzed by the on-site Sleep Doctor, who will then offer customized advice for sleeping better.

Royal Sleep Experience, Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa

Guest room at Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa
SmarterTravel Hotels

Normally a day spent champagne-tasting doesn’t result in the best quality of sleep later that night, so leave some extra time to recover on your vacation in the Champagne region of France by booking the Royal Champagne Hotel’s Royal Sleep Experience.

At the hotel’s Le Bellevue restaurant, participants will dine from a special sleep-enhancing menu paired with a “Sleeping Beauty” mocktail. Back in their room, a sleep kit with melatonin-based supplement drops, sleep spray, satin sleeping mask, and guided meditation sessions awaits.

Hästens Sleep Spa, CBR Boutique Hotel

Guest room and adjacent patio at CBR Boutique Hotel
CBR Boutique Hotel

Hästens makes some of the most expensive mattresses in the world, with custom models costing over $500,000. The beds are made entirely by hand, using layers of horsehair, cotton wool, and flax hand-placed springs designed to mold to and cradle the user.

The brand is so proud of its mattresses that it opened CBR Boutique Hotel, a fifteen-room hotel showcasing Hästens’ mattresses, pillows, linens, and bathrobes. It’s the only hotel in the world where you can experience the Hästens sleep system, so be warned—you may leave wanting the mattress for yourself as a very expensive souvenir.

Some visitors come to South Beach looking to take advantage of the bars, restaurants, and nightlife that make the Miami area such an exciting place to be, while others are all about the calm waters, smooth sand, and sunshine that make South Beach ideal for summer fun.

These hotels are the best places in Miami to get a good night’s sleep after a day on the beach and a night at the clubs.

Brickell Key isn’t far from Miami, but its island location, slightly apart from downtown makes it feel a world away. The best Brickell Key hotel is the Mandarin Oriental, which offers a relaxing oasis.

Inside the hotel, guests will find walk-in showers, soaking tubs, and comfortable beds, along with some of the best views of Miami from their windows. When you want to experience the bustle and excitement of the city, you’re only a five-minute walk away from downtown Miami.

If you want to stay in for a secluded getaway, the Mandarin’s private beach and extensive room service menu mean that you can enjoy a fantastic vacation without ever having to leave the property.

Coral Gables is nicknamed “The City Beautiful,” and the Biltmore Hotel certainly lives up to that description. The hotel dates back to 1926, and a 2018 renovation has brought its features up to date without sacrificing any of the charms that make this place special. Marble columns and hand-painted décor create a magnificent atmosphere, and amenities include the largest hotel pool in the continental United States.

Along with the pool, you’ll find plenty of recreational activities on the property, including tennis courts, a salon, and a championship golf course. You’ll also find easy access to some cultural activities in Coral Gables, such as the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and the Lowe Art Museum. If you’re looking for more than the beach on your trip to Miami, this is one of your best options just south of the city.

Remember, Miami and Miami Beach are not the same place. South Beach sits a bridge away from Miami proper, which makes hotels on the beach prized for those who are looking for a beach trip out of their time in South Florida. The Nobu Hotel is one of the top options on Miami Beach because it sits just across from the sand, offering guests easy access to the waterfront whenever they want to check out the ocean.

On the property, guests can enjoy three outdoor pools, spacious rooms with fantastic views of the Atlantic Ocean, luxurious tubs and showers, and some of the best culinary experiences in Miami. The hotel is home to Chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s restaurant Nobu Miami, one of the best Japanese restaurants you’ll find anywhere. You’ll also have easy access to Miami Beach’s nightlife, making this one of the best hotels in Miami if you’re looking for the best of beach life and upscale experiences.

This is the ideal spot to sleep off a long night on South Beach because you’re surrounded by luxurious items as well as an environment where everyone’s trying to get the most relaxing weekend they possibly can.

A stay at the Setai is definitely a splurge choice for your time on the beach, but if you really want to come to Miami to get away from the stress of daily life, this is the place to be.

The Shelborne South Beach proves that guests don’t have to sacrifice luxury for affordability as it offers direct beach access, heated pools, and comfortable beds and balconies in the rooms for cheap rates. The property underwent a full renovation in 2014 and now carries a modern Art Deco atmosphere that more than serves the needs of its guests.

With easy access to both the beach and the restaurants and nightclubs on Collins Avenue, this is a great place to stay if you’re looking for a cheap South Beach hotel.

The Fontainebleau is the original Miami Modern hotel, and it’s still one of the best. It’s been around since the 1950s, but its current version first appeared in 2008 as one of the top resort options available for South Beach travelers. You won’t ever have to leave Fontainebleau to experience the best of Miami Beach, as it’s home to LIV, one of the top clubs in the city, and Scarpetta, a famous Italian restaurant.

Fontainebleau’s rooms cater to both the party crowd of South Beach as well as those who want to relax and get away from stress. Multiple towers feature different atmospheres, so you can customize the vacation vibe you want. Both the large pool and easy access to the beach make sure that this is one of the best hotels in Miami for anyone looking for some fun in the sun.

A 2020 renovation took what was already a popular hotel and made it into one of the best hotels in Miami Beach. W South Beach offers the largest rooms in South Beach, and each one provides a private balcony to allow guests to enjoy the sunshine while escaping from the crowds.

This hotel caters to art and culture lovers, as it sits right across the street from the Bass Museum of Art and the outdoor sculptures of Collins Park. The hotel offers its own collection of top-quality art, and a tour of W’s gallery is included as part of the resort fee. Head in the other direction, and you’ll run right into the main draw of Miami Beach: the beach itself.

Four Seasons at the Surf Club

Palm trees in the corridors, clean and comfortable room designs, luxury bathrooms, and poolside service await you at the Four Seasons. This hotel’s the ideal choice for those who really want an escape, as it’s situated in the Surfside section of northern Miami Beach. That means you’re not going to find the party scene that you would on South Beach, which can be a good thing for those who want a calm, tranquil beach getaway.

If you’re looking to spend as much time in the water as possible, this is a great choice. Three pools, beach access, and an older clientele mean that you’ll be able to enjoy the beach without getting interrupted by the more boisterous scenes further south.

Lido Restaurant and the Surf Club restaurant ensure that you’ll enjoy top-quality meals without having to leave the resort, and you’ll wake up to fantastic views of either the city or the ocean, depending on your room’s location.

Faena Hotel Miami Beach

SmarterTravel Hotels

Have you ever wanted to spend a few days living like you’re in a movie? The Faena Hotel offers exactly that scene, as recent renovations made it look and feel more like something that belongs on the big screen as opposed to off the Atlantic Ocean. The bedrooms are bright and well-lit for enjoyment during the day, and the comfortable bedding makes for a restful night’s sleep when the day’s over.

The Faena’s best described as kind of an in-between spot as far as the South Beach party scene. It’s not as boisterous as the furthest south locations, but it’s not as quiet as the northern section of the beach. You’ll find elegance and touches of whimsy here, along with top-quality service and easy access to the beach.

Sometimes, you just want to get away from the kids and enjoy a weekend free of responsibilities and heavy on adult fun. The National Hotel is the best adults-only hotel in Miami. Previously, the National was known for its infinity pool as well as its beach access, but it’s now established itself as one of the few spots in Miami that is only open to adult guests.

Some of the recent property updates include a martini bar inside the hotel, an outdoor bar for beach guests, and a full restaurant inside the hotel. The infinity pool is still as majestic as ever, and guests can enjoy massages, ocean views, and quality-sized rooms in one of the more historic buildings on South Beach. It’s also situated just off Collins Avenue for easy access to nightlife and bars.
